Kyle Walker of Manchester City

MN: A Kjaer-esque addition – the reasons Milan are keen on Man City captain Walker

It seems to be a battle between Marcus Rashford and Kyle Walker as AC Milan pursue two Englishmen to bolster the squad available to Sergio Conceicao.

According to MilanNews, the Walker and Rashford pursuits are running parallel but cannot merge due to a regulatory stipulation that prevents Milan from being able to sign more than one English player in January.

There are several reasons that the Milan management are keen on signing Walker, who they believe could represent a top-quality addition not only in technical terms, but above all in the dressing room. Comparisons have been drawn with the signing of Simon Kjaer in the 2019-20 winter window.

The feeling is that the Englishman could bring to Milanello a winning mentality that he acquired in the golden cycle of Pep Guardiola’s City, of which he was one of the undisputed leaders on and off the pitch

Being a reference point in the dressing room is probably useful to a team that lack charismatic leaders. Walker’s experience could also serve as a stimulus to the entire group, raising the level of attention in training and in games.

The 34-year-old wants to leave City, he did not train with the rest of the squad yesterday and he seems keen on joining Milan, even putting offers from the Saudi Pro League on hold who could guarantee a big salary.

His contract with the Citizens expires in 2026, but this should not represent a major obstacle in the event that the discussions with Milan were to be fruitful.

  1. You sign Walker. Thr two immediate needs are a quality replacement right back and an attacking midfielder. Walker and an in-form Theo is about as good as it gets.

Rashford is a nice to have.

    1. Walker isnt quality though.
He is a glorified speed merchant, who has lost his speed. I dont want neither, but I do prefer Rashford over Walker, even on a dry loan.

      1. LOL. Walker isn’t quality? And Emerson is? 😀 😀 😀

Walker with both legs amputated would be a huge upgrade over Emerson so there’s that to consider…

        1. Haha – yeh I’d take Walker and his leadership qualities. Don’t really see the point of bringing in a wayward left winger. Our right full back position on the other hand is on life support.

        2. Who said Emerson was quality? Emerson is garbage. But that doesnt take away from the fact that Walker has been doing that, walking, this season. He is, and always has been, a speed merchant. But he lost his speed.

  2. I really don’t see the logic here, if we are getting a replacement for Calabria and Florenzi, it’s better to get someone not more than 25, someone with a future, then we need more Italian players, it’s presently affecting us, and also affecting the UCL list, besides we have Emerson and Terraciano, if you go into the Futuro and Primavera set up you have Coubis, Bakoune ,and Leonardo Alessio, wouldn’t it be better to upgrade and enhance them, than to bring a 34 year old who is coming to the end of his career…..

    1. He will do a better job than anyone we currently have for 18 months and we can assess then.

Coubis is naturally a CB, and I don’t see enough in Bakoune or D’Alessio personally, but maybe in 18 months one of those will be the answer or maybe we sign from outside.

We have a lot of holes to plug so where there is quality available for nothing you take it.

      1. Coubis played at the right back position extensively for the youth sides, even the one or two friendlies played for the snr team was at right back, even for Romania, he played their youth games as a right back..

  3. At 34 he’s still one of the fastest players in the world, he can invert effectively, he can play defensive midfield, he’s not scared of getting into the other final third. He’s top class.

My gut says this ‘foreign adventure’ he apparently wants is probably more likely silly money in America, but if he’s up for it I’d love to have him at RB.

    1. Plus all the Englishmen can cross the ball. Unlike Calabria or Emerson. But still I think Walker’s best “gift” to Milan would be his leadership.

  4. Well we only got 4 right backs in the club right now with Emerson, Calabria, Florenzi and Jimenez who can also play there, and we know how much the management like to have right backs. So Walker seem like the perfect addidtion to this key position?

God forbid we should sign another winger or defensive midfielder. Better just run Fofana and Reijnders to the ground, and pray Leao, Pulisic and Chuckwueze stays healthy all season.

  5. So what was the point of buying Emerson? We splashed 17m on a right back, only to further upgrade for the very same position barely 6 months later. I meant, it’s not about Emerson or Walker, but more on the management and their scattershot decisions that indirectly confirmed that the purchase of Emerson was a not a right move.

And then let’s talk about Walker. He has regressed a LOT this season and appeared to be out of form as well. Not to mention his recent antics, there’s a lot of red flags here. He would still be an upgrade for Emerson, but at what cost? I imagine he would command a significant salary too. I suppose this purchase would be justified if we reach CL spot at the end of the season, but still, I’m sorry but I personally am not fond of this transfer at all.
