MN: The ‘strange case of Bakayoko’ adds another instalment in Fiorentina game

By Oliver Fisher -

There were more eyebrows raised during the defeat against Fiorentina on Saturday night as Tiemoue Bakayoko was again given minutes off the bench.

Pietro Mazzara talks about the ‘strange case of Bakayoko’ in his weekly column for MilanNews, recalling that for a year and a half he has been outside of the plans of head coach Stefano Pioli having not made a single appearance this season before he got a few minutes at the end of the game against Monza.

In January the club tried in every way to find the Frenchman new accommodation yet Bakayoko decided to stay until the end of his loan deal, so it was presumed that he would continue to be on the outside looking in until June.

However, his introduction against Monza was motivated by Pioli’s desire to add height given the number of crosses coming into the penalty area. Then on Saturday evening he was preferred to both Aster Vranckx and Tommaso Pobega, which is somewhat strange given that the Rossoneri were changing the game.

  1. Perhaps Pioli wanted Milan to lose so they’d be pissed off against the Spurs? That would pretty much be the only valid reason for fielding Bakayoko when 1-2 goals behind the opponent.

  2. Considering how limited our options are in medfield it makes sense to use him, he earns enough.
I thought he did ok when he came on.

Dont get why Pioli has given up on vranckx. He looked the best of our summer signings in first half of season. He played well mostly
Sure he gave a foul away v roma but its not like he gave away a penalty.
    Young players make mistakes.

I think with a run in the team he would be a real asset

    1. And Vranckx has been terrible everytime he’s played and will be leaving in the summer, I hope you don’t just watch highlights…

  3. Bakayoko already free transfer after this season end. Maybe they have plan to sign him again with reduced salary so they decide play him
