A final chance amid replacement uncertainty: The truth about Bonera’s fate as Milan Futuro boss

Milan Futuro are going through a very complicated first season, and naturally the head coach Daniele Bonera has come under scrutiny.

Over the weekend, Matteo Moretto of Relevo reported that Bonera is ‘heading towards dismissal’ with the defeat against Lucchese ‘decisive’. He would then go on to add that Italy U19 boss Alberto Bollini is the favourite to replace him.

According to what we have learned through our colleagues at SempreMilan.it, Milan seem intent on giving Bonera one more chance in the next match against Pianese, despite the damaging loss at the weekend and the perilous position in the league.

The No.1 target and the difficulties

The Rossoneri management have not yet officially spoken about a possible dismissal, but the negative results are not convincing at all, in a situation that somewhat mirrors that of Paulo Fonseca in the first team. The feeling is that a defeat on Saturday could be the final straw.

In the event of a change in head coach, one of the names circulating is that of Alberto Bollini who is currently in charge of Italy’s U19 team.

However, the main issue concerns his current position in the FIGC being quite a solid and important one, which could complicate the transition to Milan Futuro.

Furthermore, Bollini himself seems to have doubts about the possibility of leaving a stable position for a job that appears to be a real gamble for any coach at present

The uncertainty that surround the team (with many key players being shuttled between the senior side and the U23 team) and the fact Milan Futuro are third-bottom makes them an unattractive destination for already established profiles.

Hanging on to Bonera

Despite rumours of a possible imminent sacking, the feeling is that Milan wants to keep Bonera as long as possible. The management seems willing to give him more time, but it is clear that another defeat could lead to a drastic decision.

In this scenario, the club could veer towards a different profile, perhaps a former player, thus avoiding particularly expensive choices. Or, they could focus on a caretaker in view of Federico Guidi’s future promotion.

Guidi, the current coach of the Primavera, is doing well with that particular side and they are heading for the Scudetto play-offs. However, he does not seem to be an option for an immediate promotion because he would be disrupting the work done so far with the current side.

If Milan decide to part ways with Bonera, one of the most plausible hypotheses could be to entrust the team to an experienced interim who knows the level well (like Emanuele Troise or Massimo Carrera for example).

It is a choice that would guarantee stability until the end of the season before a possible reorganisation in view of next season. However, as mentioned, Bonera’s fate will depend a lot on the result against Pianese.

  1. He’s failed multiple times. How many final chances does he need? This project is literally teetering to the edge because he clearly is out of his depth.

    1. He has definitely been given too many chances and the fact that Abate wasn’t offered the job to begin with is a disgrace and seems to fall back on Ibras ego and nepotism. Unfortunately Abate highly likely wont arrive now as he is successful in the same league and might end up coaching a Serie B team next season.
On the positive side it might have given some of our youngsters a bit more hair on the chest to have been fighting an uphill battle all season but we still need to salvage this u23 team from relegation.

  2. Usually when a good/better player is benched for unknown reasons one would say he’s sleeping with the coach’s wife. But here it has to be the reverse, someone’s definitely ban.ging Bonera’s wife 😅 How does he still get all these chances?

    1. Or perhaps bonera actually owns the futuro, the team establishment could have been his idea.

You know no matter how many matches Como losses, they aren’t gonna sack fabregras

      1. No the idea is not his. It was there in the making long before and there’s nothing indicating it’s his idea. Don’t put Fabregas and Bonera in the same sentence. Fabregas is miles ahead of Bone-error. What’s he’s doing with Como is nothing short of a miracle, it is the worst technical level team in the league, yet they’re above the relegation zone and playing an attractive style of football which even we can only dream of. If I were a mid table or upper-mid club I’d take a chance on him.

  3. Dumbahh Ibra, letting his ego make choices and firing Abate: The PERFECT person for the job. And hiring this clown, and now the management are afraid of having to swallow their pride and basically admit for the 10th time in a row that they completely F’kd it in the summer…
