Theo Hernandez explains feeling of replacing injured brother Lucas: “I play for both of us”

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan defender Theo Hernandez has pledged to play both for himself and for his brother given it is his injury which presented the sliding doors moment at the World Cup for Theo.

There was some surprise when France boss Didier Deschamps elected to field Lucas Hernandez at left-back for Les Bleus’ opening game of the World Cup against Australia, one which saw them start badly but recover to win 4-1.

Lucas went off in serious pain in the first half and it has since emerged that he has suffered an ACL injury in his left knee, with Theo coming on in his place and providing an assist for Rabiot to make it 1-1, and he added another assist in their 2-1 win over Denmark yesterday.

Speaking at France’s training retreat, Theo was asked by reporters about having to step up in unusual circumstances given the injury to his brother Lucas, with his comments relayed by Calciomercato.com.

“I play for both of us. When we learned of my call-up he was proud of me, and the feeling was mutual. It’s not easy for him, he’ll have to stay out for a long time. And when I got into his place it wasn’t easy for me either. But then I did what I had to do,” he said.

Did you say anything in particular?

“We’ve been talking every day since he left the training camp. We have to win every game and bring him the Cup”
