GdS: Allegri at a crossroads as Italy calls – three reasons for and against staying

There could be yet another coaching carousel in Serie A this summer, and AC Milan might well be a part of it.

La Gazzetta dello Sport confirm that Massimiliano Allegri is an increasingly credible candidate for the national team job, depending on how the FIGC presidential elections go. Antonio Conte is another name on the radar, but the first step is understanding what Allegri wants.

Why stay and why leave?

Abstractly, the reasoning for remaining at Milan are straightforward. The Rossoneri are his chosen place, one of the three vertices of the triangle with Turin and Livorno on which he has built his life.

The Champions League, which Milan hope to secure soon, is an environment Max has missed greatly in recent years, the ideal challenge to continue the climb he’s begun in recent months.

Yes, but the national team? It’s in his plans for life, but 2026 is certainly not the easiest time to enter the federal structure. Ideally, Allegri could don the four-star jacket in two, four, six years.

At the same time, there are arguments that push him toward the Azzurri. The national team is very attractive, and Allegri, on paper, was born for that role.

He’s not obsessed with on-field work, he handles pressure like few others, and he coaches important matches better. The challenge would be life-changing: every coach grows by watching the World Cup, and if he can experience it from the inside, he doesn’t need asking twice.

The situation at Milan, moreover, is not ideal right now. There’s a future to plan and many aspects to clarify internally, if they want to experience a summer with a shared project and unity of purpose.

A matter of time

Timing will be crucial. The federal president will be elected on June 22nd: late, in football terms. Before that, much sooner, Allegri will hold the most important meeting on the 2026-27 season with Milan.

When? Immediately after qualifying for the Champions League, if they qualify. At that meeting, the future will be discussed, and Max will likely ask for a clear plan, with defined roles, that will include strengthening the team.

He’s looking for high-calibre reinforcements with international pedigree. Anyone who suggests that a striker, a central defender and a midfielder are his primary targets isn’t far off. Then everything will hinge on desires.

  1. The question is: should Allegri leaves for whatever reasons (accepting Italy’s job or failing to secure a UCL spot) and assuming Leão (and maybe even Pulišić) leaves this summer should we ditch the 3 at the back system and build a team around a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 or try to improve what we’ve already got ?
Losing Leão and perhaps Pulišić, while being sad for me personnally, means we no longer have wingers and wingers issues in a front 2, so we can get forwards for a 3-5-2 without fear of what to do with wingers.
Should instead prefer a back 4, are our defenders good enough for a back 4 ? Wouldn’t we need to get 1 or possibly 2 CBs this summer ?

    1. But even with two pure forwards our teams struggles to create decent service to the frontline. We play without a 10. Modric is too deep, Fofana is too inconsistent and Rabbiot alone can’t do it. I don’t know what kind of solutions we need with 2 forwards. Maybe switch to a 4312 and play with a 10?

      1. We can get a midfielder that will play alongside Rabiot and that can create better service for our forwards.
Inter plays a 3-5-2 and doesn’t seem to struggle with creating opportunities.
