TMW: Chelsea’s interest in Leao a smokescreen as Milan are closer than ever

Rafael Leao’s contract will expire in 2024 and AC Milan are currently working on a contract renewal. In spite of Chelsea emerging as a contender again, per the latest reports, the Rossoneri are confident.

Leao has been a key player for Milan this season and after a post-World Cup slump, the winger has found his stride once again. Against Napoli, he was instrumental and that was best evidenced by Milan’s goal in the second leg.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Milan are working on the renewal and ‘have never been so close’ as they are now to reaching an agreement. The €150m release clause should remain and there is an agreement in principle at €7m plus bonuses per year.

The Sporting fine, amounting to €20m, remains an issue and the Rossoneri are trying to understand the best solution. Obviously, Milan are not involved in the case and will not pay the fine, but want to support Leao the best they can.

In the last few days, as the report concludes, Chelsea have emerged as a contender again but the reality is that they are only willing to pay a lot less to get Leao. The interest, as things stand, is not concrete and is more of a smokescreen perhaps generated by Jorge Mendes (who hasn’t always pushed for the renewal).
