TMW: Inter ready to battle Milan for signing of 117-goal Napoli star

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are ready to battle with rivals Inter for the signing of Napoli striker Dries Mertens, according to a report.

As per Tuttomercatoweb – as cited by MilanNews.it – Mertens’ contract with Napoli will expire next summer, and the relationship between the player and his club does not present the necessary conditions to think about a renewal.

The report goes on to claim that Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis could allow him to leave for free next summer, and Inter have thrown themselves into the mix as they look to bolster their attacking department.

However, TMW also adds that Milan have been monitoring the situation for some time now and could launch a move on their own.

Napoli for their part not want to lose him in January, and therefore negotiations will be centered around reaching an agreement with the Belgian ahead of June.

The 32-year-old has 117 goals and 69 assists in 300 competitive appearances for the Partenopei.
