TMW: Milan cannot afford to get Kessie’s renewal wrong and the management are aware – the situation

AC Milan must find an agreement over the renewal of Franck Kessie and the management are well aware, according to a report.

As TMW writes, Milan have been the most active on the market so far of the top Serie A clubs in terms of spending, having bought Mike Maignan from Lille for €13m and having exercised the €28m option to buy for Fikayo Tomori. However, Gianluigi Donnarumma has left on a free transfer and Hakan Calhanoglu jumped on the other side of the Naviglio.

Almost all fans have appreciated the strategy from Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara which has been along the lines of ‘this is our best offer, take it or leave it’ – without giving in to agents. However, it is a fact that Milan have lost two of their most influential players on a free transfer and are finding difficulties in renewing the likes of Romagnoli, Calabria and Kessie, all expiring in 2022.

Kessie is the ‘needle of the balance’ as per the report, as the Ivorian was instrumental last season but knows he has a line of clubs interested in him. He wants €5m plus bonuses to renew and Milan have offered just below €4m, but they know they categorically cannot afford to lose him on a free transfer.
