TMW: Roma could ask for Milan captain as counterpart in Abraham negotiations

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan have set their sights on Tammy Abraham to complete the attacking department, but reaching an agreement with Roma is far from easy. According to a report, the Giallorossi could ask for the Rossoneri’s captain to be included.

As reported by TuttoMercatoWeb this afternoon, Roma are looking for a new right-back and Davide Calabria is one of the names on their shortlist. The key to materialising that interest could be Abraham, who has been heavily linked with Milan in recent days.

Calabria could lose his starting spot to Emerson Royal for the upcoming season and as such, he might reconsider his future with Milan. On the other hand, he’s the captain of the team and grew up in the academy, so deciding to leave would be a far from easy decision.

As the report adds, Roma have many more names on their list and there are no concrete talks over Calabria for now. That being said, Milan’s willingness to secure Abraham could prompt the name to be mentioned during the negotiations.

For now, Calabria is focused on the final pre-season game as Milan will take on Barcelona on Tuesday evening. Then, the team will shift focus to the season opener in Serie A, which will take place in two weeks.

  1. I just can’t think of a way this could be remotely true. Don’t we have regulations for squad lists to adhere to? Or am I missing something here. We barely have homegrown players of age for the quota

    1. The homegrown stuff is very true and must be taken into consideration, but as for the capital gain, there is no such thing as a ‘true swap’. If it were to happen, they would both move individually for a fee so Milan would still make a capital gain.

  2. Pass.
Keep Calabria as a back up.
If they give up Calabria they will have to sign some Italian player just for quota purposes.
    Give them Okafor.
They’d be trading injury prone player for a player coming of an injury. Seems fair.

    1. Rather injury prone Okafor then these 2. He has potential and showed glimpses last season. Abraham is overhyped anf Calabria is not good enough

      1. The best option would be a swap loan deal but highly unlikely to happen. We need a striker and Okafor needs to play more. we have Leao, puli and Saelemakers who can play on the left.

        1. Wait…. You would rather trade Okafor but Keep limited-@$$ Alexis at the club? LOL!!! you recall the last season he actually played for us and what that looked like, right?

          1. Where in my comment does it say that I prefer Saelemakers over Okafor? Also players change with different coaches and develop over the years. So stop talking non-sense. It’s not like it’s the same Saelemakers from 2 years.

      2. This is very simple.
The coach, not me, wants to keep Saelamaekers and wants another striker. Based on reports, that striker is Abraham.
If Saelamaekers stays and another striker comes in, there is no need for Okafor.
Leao will play the majority of the minutes on the left, plus Saelamekers and Pulisic are natural left wingers. No room for Okafor on the left.
If another striker comes in because the coach wants it, there is no room for Okafor at striker, unless he wants to stay and be the 3rd choice and play even less than last season.
Fans keep bringing up other names for the striker position.
I want Locca, but the coach wants Abraham.
I thought people wanted a coach that would demand certain transfers instead of just being a yes man. Well there you go, he wants Abraham.

          1. Okafor is the better player.
Saelamaekers brings up more defensive characteristics that you need in certain game situations, especially when you need to protect the lead.
Okafor is the better player, Saelamaekers is the player Milan needs more.

    2. Why would the club captain and one of the best RBs in Italy (and for Milan in about 10 seasons) be a ‘back up’?

To satisfy everyone’s incessant desire for change?

Rather than faffing about at RB and undermining the club’s captain and identity, why don’t they focus on a DM to plug the massive hole in midfield they created last summer?

      1. You are so detached from reality, I almost feel bad for you.

Calabria hasn’t been the best anything during his time at Milan. He is a joke of captain – you of all people should realize that seeing as to how our previous captains were Baresi and Maldini… He is VERY average. Davide Calaverage!

        1. Don’t feel bad for me.

Feel bad for yourself as you’re incapable of distinguishing your own subjective opinions from reality.

What’s not opinion is recorded history.

Calabria is a Scudetto winning full back therefore he is, by definition, a full back capable of winning a Scudetto.

And being a Scudetto winning full back puts him in the top 0.01% of full backs on the planet.

Whether or not he’s at the same level at Barsei or Maldini is irrelevant.

          a) Because in modern game Maldini and Baresi probably wouldn’t even be playing for Milan (and they certainly wouldn’t ‘t have stuck around for more than a few seasons);

          b) Because randomly comparing random players and living in the past (as in the distant and completely unrelated past not the very recent past of the actual player under discussion) is of no use to anyone.

Now no doubt you are very confident that the full back that’s in your head is one day, maybe capable of winning a Scudetto but I’m afraid that is pure speculation NOT reality.

Rather than further dismantling our Scudetto winning side we should be building on it, including by making up for last summer’s f up where we created a massive hole in our midfield.

        2. “You are so detached from reality, I almost feel bad for you” lol

          You again started judging people???
He has his opinion which differs from your dumass one and suddenly he is detached from reality. Oops. Yaaay

          1. Unfortunately so many people around here can’t seem to distinguish between their own subjective opinions and reality but one thing about their ‘realities’ is that they seem to be similar to the ‘reality’ that the advertising industry has created for decades.

This what drives so much of the talk around here where people are dissatisfied with their current players/car/vacuum cleaners and imagine that some other player/car/vacuum cleaner will fill that void in their lives.

Best to live for the moment I say….

  3. I just want to make sure that people defending Salemaekers remember his last full season at Milan and what that looked like, when he couldn’t outplay Messias…

The fact that he looks good in pre-season playing against the youngsters of other clubs and “looking good” without our starters means nothing.

He has no room at the club. I dont care what Fonseca says.

    1. We get you the Salad.

But is it not possible that he has improved? 2 years ago he was forced into a starting position because we lacked quality at RW. Now we don’t.

Let’s make no mistake Salad is not a starter – but as a BACKUP – he is perfect as he can play multiple positions and works his arse off for the shirt. Any coach would want such a player.

Okafor should be kept as well – rather Okafor as a backup RW and striker/false 9 – then Jovic any day of the week.

But Rebord are cheap and don’t want to spend so someone has to be sacrificed as Fonseca seems to love Abraham AND Salad

    2. His last full season at Milan he scored the goal of the season and helped Milan to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

We then had to go and sell him and sign 3 right wingers….and a left winger.

Now that we have 3/4 wingers there’s no room for Salemaekers (or any other wingers).

It’s got zero to do with your totally random arbitrary views of this elite athlete’s abilities and more to do with the simple fact that the rules of football dictate that you could only have 11 players on the pitch at one time.

      1. Those were not the contributions I remember.

I remember our Left wing carrying this entire team INTO the CL semi’s, while on the RT, choosing between Messias and Salemaekers was like choosing between a washing machine and a bookshelf to play down the wing…

        THAT I do remember.

        1. Do you seriously believe that Milan got to the semi-finals of the Champions League with, what (how many of that team do you RATE) 6-7 players (given presumably you’re discounting at least Calabria, Krunic, Tonali and Salemaekers (and possibly Bennacer)?

Apparently this 11 v 11 thing is a struggle for people but I can assure teams starting out with 6-7 players against 11 won’t do very well.

And just explain what Salemaekers’ role was – he and Calabria provided balance on one side of the pitch to free up Theo and Leao on the other side. That’s a pretty common set up since very few teams can pull off all attacks on both sides.

Pulisic was an upgrade because he managed to keep a bit of steel down the right hand side as well as contributing more to the attack. I suspect Chuk has struggled not just because Pulisic has blocked him but also with Leao on the left it becomes too unbalanced.

Anyway that’s all history. I have already said Salemaekers needs to go because we signed too many wingers. Onwards (and whether or not its upwards remains to be seen).

  4. I couldn’t care less if he stay or go.
I just want to see someone else wear the arm band next season.
Someone with leadership, strong personality and charisma like maignan.
Not even theo or leao should be the captain.
Now that i think about it, milan really lack player with those characteristics.
Aside from maignan I don’t see anyone else.

    1. Calabria is a Scudetto winning captain.

Given Milan have ‘only’ won 19 Scudetti and he is one of a handlful of human beings to have ever captained Milan to a Scudetto win.

Now I am sure Calabria could never quite match your completely arbitrary and imaginary expectations of what a ‘proper captain’ should be, but frankly I couldn’t care about that because you know what they say opinions and arseholes.
