TMW: Milan begin hunt for Fofana’s deputy – the name that stands out

Youssouf Fofana is already beginning to show how important he is to Paulo Fonseca’s AC Milan side, and the management are looking into signing a deputy.

According to Niccolò Ceccarini of TMW, one of the areas that Milan are focusing their attention is the midfield. Fofana is becoming increasingly essential in Fonseca’s tactical plans and is the ideal player to support a formation with the two strikers plus Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic.

His work in front of the defence is very important but one of the issues that has arisen is that there is no other player in the squad who has the same characteristics. Yunus Musah is a possibility but he has to get used to this position, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been inconsistent in terms of form and fitness.

Given the length of the season and the number of games to play, Milan could also decide to try and sign another defensive midfielder as early as the January window. It is still early but there is no shortage of reflections.

An idea leads to an old target also pursued in the summer window: Johnny Cardoso of Real Betis. He is very popular among the management, and the USA international already knows Pulisic and Musah.

  1. That would be a smart move. I think Fofana is great but yes, with Bennacer’s injury, Musah’s irregular performances, and Vos initially appearing good for Milan Futuro but kind of missing in action ever since his good first game, indeed we may need a better deputy for Fofana. Maybe Vos will grow into a player who can fulfill this role but for the moment he is just a promise, so if a true defensive midfielder comes in the winter window, that would be great.

  2. How many attempts does it take!

And we already had one of the best midfields in the league and the only player we couldn’t do anything about losing was Kessie (who hilariously the fans blame the club NOT the mercenary player).

Even after losing Kessie we still made it to the semi-finals of the Champions League where we dominated the midfield.

It’s just a farce. By the time we replace Tonali we’ll have spent three times his transfer fee!

    1. the thing is they signed Fofana and thought it was all done…

they waste so much time on deals that don’t go anywhere that they don’t have enough time to figure out better Tammy deal (even an option set under 20M would have been a great deal. now the only hope is his contract until 2026) and who comes when Benacer leaves, although kudos for still spending under 50M for Emerson, Morata and Fofana…

      1. Morata and Fofana are great but what it has to do with Tonali? Fofana would play with Tonali just as well as Benacer played with Kessier. And in term of money the Tonali cash already beed spent last season

        1. I was saying entire mercato that we are missing midfielders… how did season start? Bennacer injury, RLC being as useless as ever (that’s 8M we spend on them that is just going down the drain)… I was criticizing the management of ruining our midfield that’s all…

  3. Transfermarkt has him at 25M€ atm. doubt betis will ask for less. The bright idea here is to buy a player for 20+M to be a sub?
No serie a exp, only 9 moths in eu football

  4. Again with foreigners without Serie A experience and language barrier. These yanks are treating European football as if it’s a closed tournament like those in USA where it doesn’t matter from which club a player comes cause they all play same tournament. What a bunch of imbe*iles.

    1. I swear to god, Gerry thought he would see Eiffel when he came to Milan and drink beer on Oktoberfest with “local Germans”… US geography skills strike again!

    2. The only imbecile around here is you. Well no, actually there are quite a few on here.
EVERY TEAM, in EVERY top league, signs players from all around the world who speak different languages than the language of the country they are in.
And the whole it’s a different league they play differently talk just shows you never played. The game is the same everywhere, you can either play or not. Are you telling me that every team in a league plays the same style, and it’s different in every country? Really? You don’t see the stupidity in that line of thinking?

  5. As an American I can say that Johnny is a good player but he doesn’t make a ton of sense for Milan right now. He can’t play a single pivot very well. However, he is very technical and a good passer.
I think Yunus has a higher upside — it’s been a shame to see some Milan fans lose patience with such a young player.
