CM: Tomori-Kalulu and a signal for the future – how Milan’s defence should look in 2022-23

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan have been boosted in recent weeks by the strength of their defence and in particular the duo of Fikayo Tomori and Pierre Kalulu.

As Calciomercato.com report, Milan know that a point in Reggio-Emilia is enough to celebrate their 19th Scudetto and while Rafael Leao has been the face of the attack for a couple of months at least, it is the Kalulu-Tomori duo at the centre of the defence that are a big reason behind the recent run.

The Englishman has been the pivot of the Rossoneri project while the Frenchman has probably been the revelation of the season, having stepped up brilliantly in the absence of Simon Kjaer, even displacing club captain Alessio Romagnoli.

The numbers of the last 10 Serie A games tell a story: only two goals conceded (against Lazio and Verona) and eight clean sheets collected. That means Milan are the joint-best defence in the league having conceded 31 goals all season, and that sends an important signal also in view of next season.

Maldini and Massara are expected to sign Sven Botman to bolster the department and replace Romagnoli, while Kjaer should be back fully after injury. With the league, Champions League and the Coppa Italia to contest next season, having Tomori, Kalulu, Botman, Kjaer and Gabbia is a strong group.

  1. Milan’s defence should look like Tomori-Kalulu starting pair. Then backups are after those two including whether or not they get (overrated) Botman. Anyone who thinks Kalulu isn’t starter material needs to get their heads checked.

    1. Kalulu has more than earned his place and should continue to start. He’s a gem.

That being said, Botman is certainly NOT overrated.

      1. Go look at his positioning vs Chelsea in the UCL and come back to me on that. Look at the first 10mins of the first leg specifically where Havertz owned him and also look at the Pulisic goal in the second leg. He’s accountable for that goal. His marked the incorrect player and allowed space at the back and couldn’t recover because he did not have pace.

  2. Sven botman is not an overrated player… He will b a good addition to the set of young and vibrant defenders at our disposal.. meanwhile, we need to start discussing on how to the attacking force should be come next season
