Conceicao Tomori

MN: ‘Something could change’ – Tomori likely to be cast aside by Milan in summer

Fikayo Tomori has been a regular in the defensive line for AC Milan for years, but it seems like the club are ready to move on, even if he is not.

Things have been rather peculiar for Tomori recently, however, the current situation is rather telling. Under Paulo Fonseca, disciplinary reasons resulted in him looking likely to leave the club in January, but then the Portuguese was sacked.

For Sergio Conceicao, the idea of selling the Englishman was ludicrous, but then the club accepted a bid on deadline day from Tottenham Hotspur, but the defender opted not to leave.

Since then, he has seemingly established himself within Conceicao’s backline, and with a complete defensive line available, the Portuguese seems likely to elect the Englishman to start against Torino tomorrow evening.

However, Milan News reports that the club are ready to part ways in the summer. According to the report, he has not recovered from his position in January, and has ‘lost position in Conceicao’s hierarchy’.

As a result of this, Malick Thiaw, Strahinja Pavlovic and Matteo Gabbia are preferred and are more likely to stay at the club, whilst an exit for the defender is likely if things do not improve.

  1. Tomori has been very hot and cold but he’s still a quality CB. We have four quality players we can swap in and out, that depth is important especially if we find a way to champs league next season. And we shouldn’t forget that both Thiaw and Gabbia have been injury-prone in the past. Remember last season when we had to play Theo at CB for a stretch? I think we need to keep Tomori, especially now that his value has dropped to €20-30m.

    1. Yes, also Tomori is the only one that can actually play against fast attackers. Thiaw, Pavlovic, Gabbia, very very slow defenders. So if they sell Tomori ideally they would sign a young and fast player to replace him. People seem to forget that when you play with a high line and have slow defenders it doesn’t end up well in a lot of cases.

      1. That’s one of the main reasons tomori isn’t very reliable. He uses his pace to much in a position that uses positioning and being able to read the game well, which he is then out of postion a lot and has to scramble or have the right back in a 2v1 a lot. His passing is also not very good compared to the other 3 who can at least pass over the top of the midfield start an attack.

      2. Pavlovic is fast, he can advance the ball dribbling, and better in the air than Tomori. Thiaw knows how to play positional defense better than Tomori and is good in the air as well, and he is the only CB that can put a pass through the midfield to the attackers which is excellent for a high attacking line. Gabbia is our best man for man defender so when we are low block defending I’d want him on the pitch, he too is good in the air but a poor dribbler and bad passer of the ball. Tomori is overall a decent CB but he doesn’t excel at anything but pace and yelling.

  2. Ridiculous reporting.
Tomori was played by Conceicao in the games that he wasn’t suspended in. In the games that he wasn’t played, his defensive teammates fluffed their lines. Thiaw, Gabbia, Pavlovic have all made major errors in the past few games that led to defeats and UCL elimination.

Why would they sell their more consistent (since Conceicao) defender?

    1. Because Tomori is prone to aggressive tackles and rash decisions. He has speed to close down attackers and that’s probably his only saving grace. Also his ceiling is limited whereas Pavlo and Thiaw have much higher ceilings.

      Offloading Tomori makes sense IMO.

      1. You take out Tomori and you lose a lot of pace in defense. See how easily Pavlovic-Thiaw got beaten by one Feyenoord cross?

Even if you get an upgrade on Tomori, I don’t see why they wouldn’t get someone who can rotate with him instead.
Conceicao plays a high line because that’s how to most effectively press the defenders. Gabbia and Thiaw cannot do that because they are slow as fook and rely more on positioning (which Gabbia got caught out on against Zagreb). You need your speedsters in the back. Pavlovic whilst not as slow as Gabbia or Thiaw, is not fast enough to cover what Tomori does (as shown in the Feyenoord goal).

Your higher ceiling doesn’t make up for the deficiencies in their game CURRENTLY.

        1. I don’t disagree with you. But if you look at the center backs we have, who is more likely to leave?

You know the management will not add an extra defender, so one has to leave for a new one to come in. I don’t think the Serbian or the German will leave due to their young age and their upside. The Italian won’t leave because we need them to make up the list. That leaves the Englishman.
