Tomori outlines Milan’s ‘identity’ and discusses dropped points: “You simply can’t win every game”

Fikayo Tomori has admitted that AC Milan have has some bumps along the road but insists the team are on the right path at present.

Interviewed by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Tomori spoke of his desire to win a trophy given that the Rossoneri are still in the running for the Scudetto and the Coppa Italia, with his comments relayed by SempreMilan.it.

“We’ve had excellent results and we don’t want to stop. We have to continue on this path and the way we approach matches is paying off. We hope to have something to celebrate at the end of the season,” he said.

Since Stefano Pioli’s appointment and Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s return in the 2019-20 season it has been a pretty much constant upwards trajectory for the Rossoneri, and that shows that something is working.

“We are focused on ourselves and on what we want to do. We have a well-defined strategy, we have followed it and it has brought us where we are,” Tomori added.

“Now we have to insist and, if possible, play with even more intensity and concentration. They will be fundamental elements. We proved it in Naples: we know the way forward to get where we want to go. And now every match, from here to the end, will be more and more decisive.”

There have been some frustrating moments this season too such as the fact that Milan have dropped points to sides in the bottom half of the table while being almost flawless against sides also in the top seven.

“You simply can’t win every game. We try but football is like this. Each team can create different problems for us but I tell our fans that we take and will take all games very seriously, regardless of who we play in the standings. All opponents can prove to be dangerous.”

Milan are in a four-way battle for the title at the moment involving city rivals Inter plus Napoli and Juventus, and Tomori believes we must wait until the end of the season to see who is the best.

“Inter are an excellent team, Napoli have quality. I also like Juventus and Roma. I don’t think there is one team better than the others, if anything, each have strengths and weaknesses. Like us, after all, we have characteristics that can allow us to win against anyone. In the end, the ranking will tell who was the table: today it rewards us and our strengths.”

The Englishman also talked about the process of working on mistakes both as an individual and as a team.

“We feel grown up, undoubtedly. We are largely those of last year with more experience, on a personal and team level. Pioli never tires of teaching us, every day we learn and grow. We work on mistakes and we are more aware of our qualities.

“We are a great group, we play as a team, we are strong on the counterattack with the outsiders, we have a good defensive phase. And we run for each other, with a spirit of sacrifice. We are young, we have energy, intensity but also identity.”

Finally, he spoke on the importance of having experienced teammates.

“We know where we are and where we want to go. We know that this is a decisive moment and that no distractions are allowed. But we have great champions who help us and show us the way.

“Maignan won the last French championship with Lille, Giroud raised the World Cup, Ibra has a crazy mentality… and in the staff there are competent and winning people like Dida and Bonera. When this group works it does so with great concentration. We are young, but determined.”
