Tomori talks leadership role, understanding with Theo and Europa League aim – video

AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori believes that Monza will be a tough opponent on Sunday, while he also spoke about feeling like a leader and playing next to Theo Hernandez.

The Englishman has been without doubt one of Milan’s best performers this season even in times of difficulty. At present he is the only fit senior centre-back so he has taken on extra responsibility to marshal what has often been a makeshift rearguard.

He returned to his home country in midweek for a Champions League game against Newcastle and he was one of the most impressive performers, even being named the MVP from the match by fans as the Rossoneri beat Newcastle 2-1.

Tomori was interviewed by Milan TV a couple of days before the game against Monza and a couple of days after the win in Newcastle.

On the game at St. James’ Park: “Before the match against Newcastle we knew well that the stadium would be full, tough. The first half was difficult, but in the second half we played with spirit, with energy and above all with quality. In the second half we deserved the victory.”

On hitting the post late on: “My two goals, against Frosinone and Cagliari, were easy to score. I also wanted to score in Newcastle, but I wanted to be too precise.”

On his role and maturity: “I feel good on the pitch with the way I’m playing. I play at the centre of the defence, I have to talk a lot and motivate the team: that’s what I’m doing.”

On his understanding with Theo: “Now Theo is next to me, we get along well on the pitch. With the relationship we have we don’t have to talk much, we know well what our qualities and characteristics are on the field.”

On the Europa League as a target: “Now we are in the Europa League and we have to give everything to win it. If we play every game like we did in the second half against Newcastle I’m sure we can do better in this competition.”

On Sunday’s match against Monza: “After the match against Newcastle we must use this confidence and this feeling that we have in the next match. We played Monza in pre-season, they are good at moving the ball. We will try to win because the season is still long. We are 9 points behind, but if we focus only on ourselves anything can happen.”
