GdS: Tonali-Newcastle situation ‘broken’ – Milan ‘intrigued’ by potential return

A report has claimed that Sandro Tonali is looking for a way out of Newcastle United because he does not feel a key part of their plans, and a return to AC Milan has been mentioned.

La Gazzetta dello Sport report that ‘something has broken in Newcastle because Tonali ‘now feels like he is passing through’ at the club despite signing a contract until 2028 last summer. Since he returned from his ban he is playing a supporting role, which is not enough for him.

The report mentions how ‘a return to his beloved Milan’ has been spoken about, something which in turn has excited the fan base. Having seen his performances since coming back with the Italian national team, it is clear that the break has not affected him too badly.

However, under Eddie Howe he has made just 13 appearances in the Premier League with only seven starts and 650 minutes. Moreover, there is a worry that Newcastle might be about to see a ‘downsizing’ in their project under owners PIF, without European football this season.

The idea of an exit in January for Tonali is yet to be verified, given that in the summer of 2023 Newcastle budgeted an expense of around €60m to land him, plus €10m in bonuses. It would have to be a loan in the winter therefore, something the Magpies might not be keen on.

In addition to that, the midfielder’s salary can hit €9m net per season including bonuses, a figure that is off the radar of Italian clubs and even more so without the Growth Decree tax advantages. The news has ‘intrigued’ Milan, but also Inter and Juventus, nonetheless.

The economic obstacle, however, applies to any Serie A side and so we cannot ignore alternative paths. Other Premier League sides may try, while Bayern Munich and PSG are always attentive to top players.

      1. Kiwior, another left footed CB Fonseca likes… He’s a reserve at Arsenal. and while we are at it Tomiyasu would be a steal! The latter has contract until 2026 and both have exp at Serie A.

If we can get rid of Emerson, I would actually prefer to keep our Captain as a reserve.

Then you have Tonali, Tiji, Fofana trio in midfield with Puli and Chukwueze on the right. Okafor is expandable, I guess. has had 0 impact this season, Chukwueze at least scored some easy goals.

RLC is a must sell and Benny, I guess, is getting his last chance until the summer. so, the question is who are the other 2?

Also Musah, RW? CM? CDM? he can’t exactly play in any of them… Our midfield is just a mess…

      2. There is many free agent defenders we can bring :
        Sergio Ramos – Španielsko, 38
        Marcelo – Brazília, 36 rokov
Adama Soumaoro – Francúzsko, 32 rokov
Ghislain Konan – Pobrežie Slonoviny, 28 rokov
Daniel Amartey – Ghana, 29 rokov
Kyriakos Papadopoulos – Grécko, 32 rokov
        Wallace – Brazília, 29 rokov
Koffi Djidji – Pobrežie Slonoviny, 31 rokov
Serge Aurier – Pobrežie Slonoviny, 31 rokov
Mário Fernandes – Rusko, 33 rokov
        Cedric – Portugalsko, 33 rokov
Bouna Sarr – Senegal, 32 rokov
Brandon Williams – Anglicko, 24 rokov
Filip Benkovic – Chorvátsko, 27 rokov
Layvin Kurzawa – Francúzsko, 31 rokov
Simon Kjaer – Dánsko, 35 rokov

  1. Newcastle will need to sell in the summer to be in line with the fair play rules. Milan could buy Tonali at a discount, though I doubt Gerry would be willing to spend enough. There is also a chance for a Tonali-Tomori swap.

  2. As much as I like Tonali, players generally don’t well with when they leave and come back again.
Furthemore, The system currently in place might not suit him. We don’t have a Kessié type of player, we don’t have Krunic, Bennacer is a shadow of his former self and we don’t have an attacking midfielder.

      1. More of a combination of more athletic Gattuso and mini Ambrosini/Albertini.
He’s got almost none of Seedorf/Pirlo, technique, skill, vision and football IQ.

    1. You don’t think Fofana and Tonali can make a good pivot? That’ll allow Tijji to play a more advanced role with less defensive duties.

    2. I dunno mate, the potential of a midfield three of Reijnders, Tonali and Fofana in a midfield three under a proper coach is exciting,

Ian Rush went back and it worked, there are some examples but understand your reservations

      1. Also Zlatan when he’s coming back, CR7 and Messi will also rocks when they’re coming back to former club if they’re in their prime.

  3. Touch wood and say a prayer. His return would feel like winning a trophy. I think this team lacks an identity and as a result a lot of fans feel disconnected from the team. Tonali would change that and the belief of the team and the fans would grow again.

    1. Only the delusional ones who still believe he is some great player, although he has never shown himself to be anything other than mediocre to good, and can’t even get playing time for a mid table team like Newcastle.

  4. Tonali played full match against Liverpool, he is one of best player’s alongside isak and other’s.
It’s a useless news, he will stay atleast couple of years to give back something to Newcastle fans for supporting him than many Milan fans.

Newcastle fans already making statements that tonali is not starting but flying with national team.
They have good midfield and they might sell forwards than midfield

    1. I watch the Premier League and this is true. Tonali is the engine of their mid, this article is nonsense. Unless Newcastle is in financial troubles they wont sell him.

  5. But how can that be? Everyone here says he’s the most amazing player yet he can’t even start for a mid-table premier league club.
Maybe we can use him as a backup if Fofana or Reijnders needs a rest. He would have to take a giant pay cut.

    1. Ha ha 😂.
They were saying that Milan sold Tonali for cheap because midfielders on his level like Rice, Bellingham, Caicedo and Enzo (😂😂😂) were sold for over a 100 mil and Milan only got 60 for Tonali.
60 mil was double than what Tonali was worth.

  6. It is not about price tag or transfer fee. Look at his salary at NU 9m euro nett. He needs to cut half his salary if want to return to ACM.

  7. Please don’t come back.
Not to the Milan where most fans think you are average, sold. Out by accepting the sale, and the only thing noteworthy you did was accept the sale, and the money wasted on the market.

Besides why would you come. Back to a Milan that is unstructured and strangely rarely buys Italians.

  8. Can’t really do anything until reijnders is signed. If they bring in someone making 7-8M before bonuses. In fact it just won’t happen unless they do move on from Theo who would want to make as much and leao who deserves as much.
