CM: Tonali’s moment of ‘physiological decline’ gives Brahim and opportunity vs. Empoli

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli appears to have decided to give Sandro Tonali some much-needed rest during the game against Empoli on Saturday, a report claims.

Calciomercato.com report how Tonali seems to be having some difficulties from a physical point of view, having perhaps now been as sharp as his performances in the first half of the season, but it is a ‘physiological decline’ that Milan were expecting given the 21-year-old has already played 2375 minutes this season.

That is 350 more minutes than the whole last season and while a leap in quality has been evident, he also needs to rest at times in order to ensure he is at 100% for the Scudetto run-in which is why Pioli is considering leaving him out on Saturday, when Milan will face Empoli at the Meazza.

This means it is highly likely that Brahim Diaz will start as the playmaker, and paradoxically the Spaniard – who hasn’t scored since the away match in La Spezia on 25 September – must take advantage of a first start in three games to try and play himself into form.
