AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali has praised his team-mates for showing that they can ‘fight to the end’ after the 2-1 win against Sampdoria.
Junior Messias had given Milan an early lead but things became complicated in the second half when Rafael Leao was given a second yellow card and Djuricic equalised for the home side, but Olivier Giroud won and converted a penalty to earn three massive points.
Tonali spoke to Milan TV after the game to reflect on what was a night full of drama at the Marassi, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.
On the match: “We started strong then it got complicated a bit, after the red it changed completely. We made good use of the opportunities we had after the red. We all suffered together, a game that can give us a lot.”
On the three-man defence: “In times of need you have to understand as quickly as possible what you need to do and deliver yourself in the best possible way on the pitch. We suffered but we were able to react with our own strength.”
On communication with his team-mates: “I communicated a lot with Aster, he needed a guide as soon as he entered the field. Then he fought with us, you just had to help him in the start, then he brought out a lot of character and a lot of strength.”
On the strength of the group: “I think today was the only way, we had to play for each other and help each other in every possible way. After the expulsion we understood that we had to fight until the end, so we did.”
On the renewal: “I am happy, first I say: I am happy to have won today. I still answer like this, it was the only goal that brings us so much happiness. It was a very complicated match.”
