Tonali reflects on Scudetto, reveals desire to stay for life and names Liverpool man as inspiration

By Oliver Fisher -

Sandro Tonali has once again insisted that he sees himself potentially staying at AC Milan for his entire career as he reflected on an incredible season.

Tonali joined Milan on an initial year-long loan deal from Brescia in the summer of 2020 and after some initial growing pains in his first season, the move was made permanent last summer with the midfielder even taking a pay cut to facilitate the operation.

The Italy international has gone on record multiple times regarding his Rossoneri faith, so it must have been incredibly sweet for him to be part of a team that went on and won the Scudetto, given that the last time the Rossoneri were league champions he was 11 years old.

Tonali was certainly one of the protagonists of Milan’s title win and he spoke during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, recalling all his emotions after the triumph.

“When you win, everything changes, if possible the attachment to the shirt increases. I was a child on the street in Sant’Angelo Lodigiano, a Milanese town, for the fan party,” he began (via MilanNews).

“In Reggio Emilia it was crazy, but I realised what we did only once we got back to Casa Milan: I saw the emotion in the eyes of the people around us, hallucinating. I said to myself: I will not pick up the phone for video or photos, I have to live these moments and keep them always with me.

“The next dream? I have already asked too much to Saint Lucia, but dreaming costs nothing and so in the future I would like to try to win the Champions League with this shirt. It would be indescribable.”

During the interview, Tonali also talked about some of his team-mates, in particular Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Rafael Leao.

“Zlatan gives security, as long as he’s there. Watching him follow the game standing on the bench is worth more than a thousand gestures. He decides for himself and for us, he could stay in his own and instead he is a champion who thinks of others first: he took us by the hand as children. I hope he stays: he raises the level, he is decisive on and off the pitch.

“The Oscar for best player of the season I give to Leao, for the games he won when we were in difficulty. He gave concreteness and points, if he gets beyond his man you know the ball will arrive. I was the first to take advantage of it; against Verona he put me in a position to score twice. There are no merits of mine if not that of being in the right place, the rest is his work.

“My greatest merit? The goal against Lazio, for the moment in which it arrived, was the biggest of the season. Another goal from inside the small area, I have to add others from outside. And improve in the choice of times on tackles, too many times I expose myself to the risk of a yellow card. I will improve, I am inspired by Thiago Alcantara.”

Finally, regarding his future: “Reducing my salary for Milan was my last thought, as was the renewal. Because it is certain that I want to stay here, contract after contract. It would be nice to become an icon, but I don’t look so much further out of luck.

“I am so attached to these colours that I know that my extension will never be a problem, it is right that the club thinks first of my expiring team-mates than of me: I already have an agreement for others four years. I want to be the least of my thoughts.”
