Totti explains why he and Maldini are not at Roma and Milan: “Overshadows everything”

Francesco Totti has given his thoughts on why certain club legends like he, Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Del Piero do not have jobs at the clubs they are so attached to.

Maldini did work at Milan as a technical director and he was a part of the management that ended the Scudetto drought, while also being involved in some notable signings such as Theo Hernandez, Rafael Leao, Mike Maignan and Fikayo Tomori.

However, less than 48 hours after the final game of the 2022-23 season, the news broke that the club icon and his right-hand man Ricky Massara were being relieved of their duties as the technical and sporting director, plunging the project into disrepute.

Totti meanwhile has often been tipped to return to Roma in various different capacities and with Daniele De Rossi now the head coach under American ownership, it feels like it could be a good time for him to do so.

He spoke during an interview with Sky (via Radio Rossonera) and he was asked why there is no Totti, Maldini and Del Piero in the world of football at the moment, suggesting that the weight of their name has something to do with it.

“Because you become cumbersome, an important name overshadows everything else. But if you are a competent and also important person this happens. If we are not taken into consideration, evidently we are tied to other objectives and thoughts,” he said.

“Do I miss it? Yes, I miss it a little. But I’m fine anyway, I have other jobs and other things to do. However, if I were to take on a position in football it would have to be demanding, but above all important.”

      1. They fired Maldini 48 hours after winning a scudetto that hadn’t been won in ages tells you everything you need to know about the loser mentality of the Cardinale ownership now you have the star players that Maldini brought here wanting out to be replaced by very average replacements example Tonali and his replacements
This team is run by fools

        1. Maldini got fired the season after the scudetto season, a very bad summer we first had Zlatan retire then Maldini sacked & later Tonali sold, nothing about this team now feels like Milan and that is a huge problem

    1. Maldini was fired cause he was demanding good players. He really wanted to make Milan great again. It costs money. Cardinal didn’t want that. It is only business for him.

      1. Buying average players also costs money. So that’s a bit of a stretch he was fired because of a want to buy players.
        Something certainly wasn’t clicking there

        1. Big lie.
He was fired because redparrot doesn’t want to invest heavily to bring Milan back to the top.
You should be the one to stop making up stories.

  1. if I were to take on a position in football it would have to be demanding, but above all important.

This is why neither one of you is in football. You demand important jobs that you are not qualified to hold.

    1. 2022 BEST SPORTING DIRECTOR OF THE YEAR

“Milan won the Italian championship after over ten years, and did so thanks to the work of an outstanding duo in the sector. Paolo Maldini, amazing on the pitch and star of the rosso nero era with Berlusconi and Galliani, has proved equally successful in terms of technical direction, interpreted with the competence and the seriousness he so ably demonstrated as a player. He was accompanied by Frederic Massara who displayed the same great technical ability he demonstrated in his previous experience alongside Sabatini in Rome. In tandem they have achieved what every director dreams of doing in football: succeed in winning by discovering and launching new talents, keeping control over investment and reacting positively to the sacrifice of losing champions like Donnarumma and Kessie.”

      1. Your surrogate father wasn’t a sporting director at Milan. He was a technical director. Massara was the sporting director.
Why did they give him an award for a position he didn’t even hold?

          1. Milan will never win anything with your surrogate father Cardinale Dejan was a great Milanista and played many years with Maldini how dare you muddy his name and image Interista Di Merda

        1. Ah yes good ol’ aggressively and insults. I don’t know the answer to your question, it wasn’t my call, maybe Maldini is the surrogate father of football committees worldwide. But I’m sure next time they will ask for the consent of some random dude on SM when distributing awards 😉

        2. It really bothers you, right? It spoils your narrative of Maldini being a bad director.
Sporting or technical (you also know that it doesn’t matter much), he was named director of the year. With good reasoning. Sorry you don’t like it.

          1. I don’t think anyone cares what awards he’s won for what position he may or not have held – it’s the fact people still can’t get over the fact he wasn’t that great at his job and… has… left… the… club….

        3. Shouldn’t you be on Siempre Madrid nursing a semi or something? There’s an overlap between sporting and technical director, you
Just turn up here to be a cockwomble….

Also you never comment on match threads…do you even watch them or just look at the statistics afterwards and make up a narrative to suit….

    2. Not qualified yet brought us back to UCL and won us Scudetto. I wonder what will you call this current management.

And at least they do not just take any role at the club. Just being the face / icon. Like that Zanetti. Can you imagine Maldini doing a sunning dance?

  2. You guys need to stop sucking the air out of Maldini behind. He did a decent everything good come to an end Beppe at Juve, Ferguson at Man U. Cardinal did replace them is the problem. At least Elliot did get a mixture of competence and learner. You guys are forgetting Gazidis was also part of the reason we were there. Not all Maldini and Masara.

    1. I meant didn’t replace them is the real issue. Plus I think we need another scout. We should get one from Dortmund or Salisburg
Buying cheap players isn’t the problem Dortmund is a prime example we are too indecisive to make deals or start talk until there’s interest from other clubs which we lose out on.

      1. But when it’s time to play blame game, it’s only Maldini fault right.

You… I don’t know what to call you lots. Redbird fanatics, Redbird watchdogs or Maldini haters. But you sure like to downplay M/M alot and praise all others irrespective of the fact of their achievements.

        Quite amusing and pathetically sad.

  3. Just curious.. if somehow Maldini was brought back by new owner or something like that, I think most of these people would stop supporting Milan altogether lol. It beggars belief how much hatred these lots have towards one of our very own legend. It’s one thing if they think that he’s crap at his job, but it’s another thing to keep insulting him on every opportunity and goading those who felt disrespected by the way he and Massara was dismissed.

If you are arguing that some of us do the same to Redbird, well, what has they won for the club? And dont bring up the financial health, as it was largely done by the good works of Elliott (especially Gazidis). Isnt Redbird supposedly going to take us to the next level? If we can snatch a Scudetto during a tough austerity period, surely with Redbird, we would be doing much better? Arent you guys beating up your chest and proudly proclaim how much money they have invested? Why we dont seem to be moving in the right direction then? Of course, Milan Futuro is an excellent job done by RB, and you might argue that we will need time to reap what have been sown. Sure. But what about the now? What are we going to do in the meantime? Why it feels like we are just stranded in the middle of nowhere? Ambitionless and directionless.

Funny that the criticism towards Maldini was that he cant sell nor he bought the wrong/trash players, but has the ones replacing him has shown us how “pros” work?

Sorry for the long read. My last piece for this site. Take a very good care everyone. Forza Milan.

    1. I truly believe they would stop supporting the club if Maldini ever came back.
They would pile on Maldini any second they get, taken his success for granted. But pile high praises for Redbird irrespective of the FACT that Redbird has not given Milan any trophy or advanced any further in the ucl.

The measurement of success for judging Redbird seems to be very flexible.
It can only be hate for maldini

  4. The hatred towards M&M is without any tangible evidence and as such is pure far cry and desperate attempt in justification of these new owners and so called managers running the club.

almost 200 millions later in two summers and we’re far worse than under M&M management. It’s more like Chinese + Fasobelli era with clean accounts but that was already done by Elliott and MGM.
