Totti explains why he and Maldini are not at Roma and Milan: “Overshadows everything”

Francesco Totti has given his thoughts on why certain club legends like he, Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Del Piero do not have jobs at the clubs they are so attached to.

Maldini did work at Milan as a technical director and he was a part of the management that ended the Scudetto drought, while also being involved in some notable signings such as Theo Hernandez, Rafael Leao, Mike Maignan and Fikayo Tomori.

However, less than 48 hours after the final game of the 2022-23 season, the news broke that the club icon and his right-hand man Ricky Massara were being relieved of their duties as the technical and sporting director, plunging the project into disrepute.

Totti meanwhile has often been tipped to return to Roma in various different capacities and with Daniele De Rossi now the head coach under American ownership, it feels like it could be a good time for him to do so.

He spoke during an interview with Sky (via Radio Rossonera) and he was asked why there is no Totti, Maldini and Del Piero in the world of football at the moment, suggesting that the weight of their name has something to do with it.

“Because you become cumbersome, an important name overshadows everything else. But if you are a competent and also important person this happens. If we are not taken into consideration, evidently we are tied to other objectives and thoughts,” he said.

“Do I miss it? Yes, I miss it a little. But I’m fine anyway, I have other jobs and other things to do. However, if I were to take on a position in football it would have to be demanding, but above all important.”
