Tuttosport: Sensational start to 2024 – the factors that sparked Milan’s turnaround

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan have enjoyed a very positive start to 2024 with a handful of factors allowing Stefano Pioli’s side to build consistency and confidence.

As highlighted by Tuttosport (via Milan News), the Rossoneri have made a sensational start to 2024 and have now won five Serie A matches in a row, whilst also winning two Europa League matches against Slavia Prague to stay in the competition.

There have only been two low points in 2024, the Coppa Italia defeat against Atalanta and the Serie A defeat against Monza. There was a second-leg loss against Rennes but the tie was already in hand.

In 19 matches in 2024, Milan have won 14, drawn to and lost three, showing there has been a genuine change of gear.

Fewer injuries are certainly one of the reasons for Milan’s success. There have been nowhere near the same level of injuries in 2024 as there were in the first half of the season.

Also, Pioli seems to have sorted out his defence. There is a lot more solidity and shape about Milan when defending which could not be seen before. Milan have only conceded 14 Serie A goals in 2024.

Another less tangible but still undeniable factor is the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Swede taking his senior advisor role has come at the same time as the upturn in form.

  1. Milan still have defensive issues and we definitely need a DM and a better CB than Thiaw and Gabbia who in my opinion are not starters.

I would dare to say Milan should consider selling Kalulu, Bennacer and Pobega. We need to upgrade on these players and we definitely should get Kayode to replace Calabria next season.

    1. Gabbia is playing really well. I would keep him.

Bennacer hasn’t seemed 100% for a while. Not sure what his issues are, but he’s a valuable piece in midfield when he’s on top of it.

      Thiaw is only 22.

Kalulu has been unlucky with injuries but when he’s fit, like in the Scudetto year, he’s a valuable piece.

Not sure how you cut any of them and why.
