Tuttosport: Calabria expected to become Milan’s new captain but Tonali is lurking

By Isak Möller -

Alessio Romagnoli’s contract will expire in the summer and seeing as a renewal isn’t looking likely, AC Milan will have to appoint a new captain. Davide Calabria is in pole position, being the current vice-captain.

As reported by today’s edition of Tuttosport (via MilanNews), Calabria is the primary candidate to take over the captain’s armband after Romagnoli. After all, he has worn it several times this season as the centre-back hasn’t always been available.

Calabria came through the youth ranks and is thus the perfect man to wear the captain’s armband, also because he has started 142 games for the club. Having said that, Milan will need a new vice-captain for next season.

Sandro Tonali is one of the players that could get that role, per the newspaper, and future captaincy cannot be ruled out for the midfielder. He’s been a fan of the club ever since he was a kid and always gives everything on the pitch.

  1. Well of course it’s these 2. They’re the only 2 italians we have left. This is why the national team continues to fail. No support for homegrown talents due to saving on taxes. I get it of course, it’s all business and money, but it I’d kind of sad how that’s all it’s become these days. Either way. Forza milan.

      1. It’s pretty easy to blame foreigners and tax laws, but the fact is that if there is a talented Italian he would emerge at a mid-table or lower club. Talent is talent. Did Chiesa not gain a starting spot a Fiorentina and then make a move to Juve? Verratti didn’t even bother with Serie A, going from Serie B Pescara to PSG. Bonucci game up at Bari and then moved to Juventus. Barella came through at Cagliari. The real issue is patience. Clubs do not have the patience to give promising youth game minutes to gain experience and develop because they’re expected to win every game, every competition. This is why some clubs also spend exorbitant amounts of money every summer, even when they’ve won something, because they’re expected to win again and again. The fact that clubs like Madrid think not winning the league EVERY YEAR is a failure is absurd. This is why we’re where we are. We as fans, have our share of responsibility for this.
