Tuttosport: Chelsea defender re-emerges on Milan’s wish list – the details

By Ben Dixon -

AC Milan are heavily expected to invest in a central defender in the upcoming summer mercato, and today, a report has suggested that they are tempted by the prospect of a defender they were once heavily linked with.

There are two leading reasons why Milan want to invest in a central defender in the summer. Primarily, the injuries that occurred this season massively hurt the Rossoneri’s chances of Scudetto success, and a repeat cannot be allowed to happen.

The other issue is that Simon Kjaer looks likely to leave the club at the expiration of his contract, with the Diavolo looking unlikely to offer him a new deal, even on reduced terms. Therefore, reinforcements are needed.

Matteo Gabbia’s return in January lessened the need for immediate investment, and his performances this season have meant that this could reduce the need to invest in numerous defenders. However, there is still a desire for additional cover.

Today, Tuttosport (via TMW) have reported that Milan could once again look at Benoit Badiashile as an option to bring to the club. The Frenchman has not played much this season but is a player with quality. Additionally, the Rossoneri’s previous history with surplus Chelsea players at a low price is a factor which cannot be ignored.

  1. hmm, all this talk of a new defender means that in addition to Kjaer, another defender is being sold or loaned.

When we had Kjaer, Tomori, Kalulu, Thiaw … we loaned Gabbia because he was not needed.

If Kjaer leaves and now we have Gabbia, Tomori, Kalulu, Thiaw … and we’re looking for a new defender, that means that one of these four is leaving (I’m not even considering Pellegrino who will be loaned or sold since he’ll be no longer an U21)

Excluding Gabbia, that is home-grown and is very hard to replace in the lists, the options are
    – Very high offer from Bayern or PL (maybe Chelsea?) for Tomori
    – Sending on loan Thiaw or Kalulu. I doubt we’ll sell them since their current price is lower due to so-so performances and injuries. My money is on Thiaw being loaned. Kalulu is needed for fullback cover as well and has double the salary of Thiaw (so fewer teams would be able to afford him)
