AC Milan have made it clear that, in the event of a further stalemate, will move their stadium project elsewhere. Inter are now evaluating the same idea and this could lead to humiliation for the city council.
Milan and Inter have been working for many years on the stadium project and lately, there has been no concrete progress. Gazzetta Dello Sport reported this morning that Gerry Cardinale will make a decision on behalf of Milan by April, with the Sesto idea now very likely.
Just like Milan, Inter are now also considering other potential areas for a new stadium, which would be built without their city rivals. This was reported by Tuttosport (via Calciomercato.com), stating that it will put immense pressure on the city council.
Milan’s idea has been to build a stadium of their own in Sesto and initial reports suggested that Inter would then stay at San Siro. However, they could decide to leave as well as they wouldn’t be able to start renovations until 2026 (after the Olympics), at which point Milan’s new stadium could be completed.
If both teams were to leave, then the city council would really be humiliated as the future use of San Siro, or the Guiseppe Meazza as it’s called, would be extremely minimal. It would also be more or less impossible to justify the continued maintenance of the stadium without any teams using it.
