Tuttosport: Dortmund defeat damaging for Pioli as ownership’s trust hits new low

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan failed to rise to the big occasion last night as they were beaten 3-1 by Borussia Dortmund at San Siro which leaves them needing a miracle to reach the last 16 of the Champions League.

Tuttosport (via PianetaMilan) recalls that with their win Dortmund have mathematically secured a spot in the round of 16 of the tournament, while with their loss Milan’s hopes are hanging by a thread.

Currently last in their group, to progress to the next round the Rossoneri will have to win in Newcastle and hope that Dortmund beat PSG at home, which seems like a very tall order indeed.

The paper speaks about ‘the nightmare of going from the semi-final of a season ago to a sensational elimination in the groups can only make the next few days incandescent for Pioli’.

Not even the presence of tennis champion Jannik Sinner made a difference, nor did Zlatan Ibrahimović being in the stands alongside Gerry Cardinale as they watched the second half unravel.

The result and the injury sustained by Malick Thiaw – the 26th since the start of the season – illustrates why today the ownership’s trust in the coach ‘has reached its lowest point’.

  1. The injuries aren’t “random” or “bad luck”. It’s the combination of lack of rotation, bad training conditions, incorrect training methods and incompetent physical staff.

The quickest fix would be proper rotation but now it’s too late when half of the squad is already out injured. And whose fault is that? Exactly.

  2. A sensational elimination ? seriously balderdash, nothing sensational if that happens as we are in a group where every team from the get go possibly could bow out of the tournament at the group stage,

    1. Oh Martin the words are coming out… balderdash ? 😂
You might quicker get a baldie dash than a balderdash 🤭
Anyways I think they were comparing what we did last year vs this year as stunning. Remember we aren’t the weakest potted team

      1. Balderdash means nonsense 😀
Too late as I’ve been freaking semi bald for twenty years and regularly clean shaves my head and has a big long beard as well so i pretty much looks like floki or some other characters from the tv show vikings 😛
Of course there is a comparison with last years semis but it still really wouldn’t be a sensation not progressing from the group considering the strength of the group. I would see it more as a sensation if we now qualify but we should nevertheless fight to the end and who knows maybe Dortmund will beat PSG as they also wants revenge for their first match against them. My hope has always been that ac milan and dortmund would qualify but just in a different order and that PSG and Newcastle were send out in the darkness so i’ll keep my slim hope for now.

        1. 😂😂😂

There’s always hope. Stranger things have happened in football so there’s that. I just hope Dort take their game seriously. Maybe players getting less time might be used but also would want to impress. PSG will seemingly need the victory as getting a draw for us or Newcastle won’t do either any good

          1. PSG needs the victory in regard of Newcastle as the englishmen are best in those 2 fixtures but in regard of us they can settle with a draw and still progress if we beat Newcastle. We need to win regardless and hope that Dortmund beats PSG as the frenchmen are best in our 2 fixtures. Newcastle does indeed also need to win while PSG loses. If Dortmund loses PSG will take first place while Dortmund takes second place.,

  3. @ Cardinale, the simple summary of everything is this:

There is certainly a lack of competence somewhere. Therefore, Let heads roll and give us a true Milan.

  4. I have had this feeling for a couple of weeks that the hold-up with Ibra is because they don’t want to define his role until they know which manager is taking us forward. You can see a strong personality saying “I don’t want Ibra around the team day to day”.

I think Pioli’s race is run. Man for man – and when fully fit, I genuinely believe we are the best team in the league. He has failed to turn that into a cohesive 11 and has to take some blame for the fact we are never, ever, close to fully fit.

He won us that unbelievable title and for that he will always be loved, but he’s not a manager who instills trust at the top level. He clearly doesn’t extract the best out of players week in week out.

Watch what happens when the day eventually comes when he is no longer our manager. He’ll be back on the provincial merry-go-round. That’s his real level.

  5. “Not even the presence of tennis champion Jannik Sinner made a difference, nor did Zlatan Ibrahimović being in the stands alongside Gerry Cardinale as they watched the second half unravel.”

Why would these people even make a difference all the way up in the stands? Wtf does a tennis player have to do with making a difference in a UCL must win tie smh 🤦‍♂️

Anyways the team, owners and PioFurCada are in perfect harmony because they sacked the problem in the summer, right ? 🤗
