Tuttosport: Fonseca’s opinion on Bennacer will be key after Saudi snub

By Oliver Fisher -

Ismael Bennacer is attracting interest from clubs in the Saudi Pro League but he has reportedly said no to the idea of heading there this summer.

The rumours began when La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed a few weeks ago that Bennacer is interested in the idea of heading to the Saudi Arabian league, which has grown rapidly thanks to the vast financial resources and continues to grow.

They claimed that there is a very good chance that he will end up playing there because Ismael is ‘very close to Arab culture’ as per the paper and for him it seems only a ‘matter of time’ before he ends up there.

According to this morning’s edition of Tuttosport (via PianetaMilan), Bennacer is a player who could attract the attention of important European clubs this summer but at the moment it is teams in the Saudi Pro League that have come forward.

The agent of the Algerian midfielder – Enzo Raiola – recently declared that now is not the time to think about a move to the Middle East for his client, given that he is approaching his prime at 26 years of age and is still getting back to 100% after a serious knee injury.

The opinion of Milan’s new coach Paulo Fonseca will be fundamental when it comes to Bennacer. If he decides that he is important then the chance of a sale will drastically decrease, but there is a €50m release clause in his deal.

  1. He is a key player. He had a serious injury last season so we didn’t see the best of him but the 2 seasons before he was a monster. That’s why Manc was interested in him. We should be building the midfield around him & Reinjnders.

  2. Bennacer would have been a world class midfielder, if he had consistency. The problem is you can’t gamble on him staying fit. If he stays, that won’t bother me. In any case we need a true number 6. The clowns running the club sold Tonali and wasted his money on three midfielders who can’t defend. At least we should get rid of Musa and RLC, keep Reijnders and buy Wieffer and Thuram

    1. We probably should give Musah time to grow.
RLC however could fetch a decent price from EPL, if we are trying to raise funds id sell him before the likes of Mike, Tomori, Thiaw, Kalulu or Bennacer

      1. Musa is a terrible at passing and being under pressure. He can’t play in our midfield especially as one of the double pivot, where a mistake results in conceding a goal. Spending 20 m is pure stupidity from the management. We need to raise as much money as we can to buy Wieffer and Thuram

        1. I don’t see us playing a double pivot as it would require us to change too many players, we are built for 433 (just someone forgot about a DM).

    2. Yunus musah play well on USA NT. With good coach guide him , he can perform good , he is already know italian languange which can help him adaptation . If ACM play 433 yunus can be tiji vice / rotation

  3. I think there are 3 players Milan must capitalize on selling. Maignan, Bennacer and Pobega.

Clubs need to know when to move on. These players time at Milan are up. All 3 of them are injury prone.

As for Maignan and Bennacer, Milan get a very good amount from their sale to reinvest in the market for younger players like Marcin Bulka and Thuram from Nice.

  4. Considering his agents comment recently that he would like to leave for saudi arabia when his contract expires in two years time he should either renew his contract or be sold to someone else as he is destined to leave on a free otherwise if his agents words are to be believed.

  5. I’m confident Fonseca will like him and it’s unlikely for any club to come forward with a crazy fee that Milan can’t say no to. So he’s likely to stay but the media seems to want him out. Last season the midfield was worse because of the tactics. Just slowly passing around with no ideas and defends with an overstretched structure so there were big gaps for opponents to exploit. A proper DM might have brought more aggression but wouldn’t have solved all that much as many seemed to believe. When defending whether pressing high or sitting, the defensive department, midfield and forward should always be closed up together. That wasn’t happening last season. Bennacer and the others will do better in a better structured midfield.

  6. This guy and Reijners are the only decent mildfielders Milan have. Musah too has potential to mature. The rest are not up to the level.

  7. Lose Benny and you’ll lose the last midfielder that can play some form of defence lol. Best to replace him first before he goes. If that’s the plan that is

    1. Thats the plan from beginning ,replace him with DMF but i dont think any club want to buy him now. Most likely pobega & adili will get sold to give room for DMF . 433 : tiji ,DMF,benny will form trio midfield

      1. I don’t think any of that will happen. Pobega is needed for lists unless they really and truly want to use the Primavera guys. Also we need more than one DM

        1. the primavera guys wont cut it for the europa quota unless they are over 21 and they won’t and has played 2 years in the club between 18 and 21 and that is for homegrown quota if i remember correctly.
They can use the youngsters as non registrated players but think they’ll have to be 17 or 18 but not completely sure but there might be some admission through uefa but not fully sure..

          1. What I do know though is if you doesnt live up to the criterias set you will risk a spot in the squad so the squad be less than allowed if a team comply to the ruleset.

          2. Oh ok. Yes that seems to be about right. I don’t keep up as much as I used to with these rules 😅. Old age is creeping in Martin 😂😂
