Tuttosport: Ibrahimovic makes it clear why Milan did not go for Conte

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was rather predictably asked about why AC Milan did not go for Antonio Conte as their head coach but instead decided to hire Paulo Fonseca.

Tuttosport (via PianetaMilan) have some reflections on Ibrahimovic’s press conference yesterday, which took place in front of 70 journalists at Milanello and in which he officially announced Fonseca as the new manager.

Why him and not Antonio Conte? The Swede’s response was clear and abrupt: “Milan needs a coach, not a manager. We didn’t discuss Conte because with the criteria we had, he wasn’t what we were looking for, his name didn’t come up.”

It must be said that Fonseca arrives amid a mixed reaction, with some believing that his CV and his failure to do anything of note at Roma mean he is not the kind of appointment an ambitious club should make, while others think he can build on the platform in place.

“Putting together all the factors we needed, his profile emerged, the one that best suited our needs. What convinced us about Fonseca was his ambition, his desire to work, to do well. For us he is a top coach, otherwise he wasn’t a Milan profile,” Ibra said.

Ibrahimovic added that Milan ‘are not a podcast or a talk show’, which is why he prefers to work in silence. He said that seeing Inter win the Scudetto energised him, he explained to the fans how the Rossoneri project is one that is built to win.

    1. I think you are missing the point. Conte is someone who wants control over more than just determining the tactics of the squad. Milan wants someone who is just a coach and the coach will ask for what they need and the management will do their best to deliver. This is so that there isn’t any rifts in the club. I understand that, but I can’t think of a coach who is successful enough and doesn’t want to manage more than the tactics. So I imagine this was the best option that was out there. Fonseca has an upward hill to climb and he might not make it past December but I don’t want that to happen. The players need to not feel as though the ship is sinking.

      1. the reason why conte is the way he is , is because he dosent want the club making a joke out of his career and then getting him sacked like what happened to pioli.

poli the yes man had all his players sold and replaced with newbies, his team started regressing in results which is natural and he got sacked.

if you let a management like redbird who are terrible selling all your players and making you look like a fool and then the fans hate you and you get sacked.

i dont blame conte for not wanting to be taken on a ride

        1. You don’t blame Conte for not wanting to be taken for a ride?
You are talking like Milan wanted Conte and he turned them down.
          Totally the opposite.
Conte wanted Milan but Milan didn’t want Conte.
Pioli was a mediocre coach who got lucky one season. Milan treated Pioli way better than he deserved.
Also, Milan sold only 1 player. I don’t know what selling all his players mean to you.

  1. maignan

    theo, Diogo, tomori, Santos/royal

    RlC, weiffer, Rei
    pulisic/ chuku. no 9/ Okafor , Leao/okafor

    subs
    Adli
    musah
    thaiw
    kalulu
    Gabbia
    sportellio
    Calabria

    out
    pobega
    salesmaker
    colombo
    origi
    Luka romeo
    Florenzi

    possible in
    zirkzee
    Artem
    Fofana
    Rabiot
    Borja

Coach Fonseca for Sucdetto and UCL Quater final. anything else is a bonus.

      1. Its not unrealistic…
Santos, Diogo, Weiffer and Zirkzee would be around 110-120 mil.
With a budget of around 50 mil + player sales or players as counterparts we can reach this sum.
But i think Fofana is more realistic than Weiffer (half of the Price)

  2. “Milan needs a coach not a manager”
This is rather insulting to Fonseca than answering the question, it made him look like a yes man for sure.

Couldn’t Zlatan just say the truth that Conte will ask for Lukaku who told Zlatan he wants to 👉👌 his wife.

  3. in short: the fans forced the managments hand in selling pioli (the yes man) so they had to find another (yes man). normally milan would have got away with this but this time the management got completely exposed.

because there were so many coaches available which having that many quality coaches all available at the same time is rare in football. the management still picked this poili version 2. they were exposed badly showing there true intentions.

  4. Long Story Short:

Milan needs a coach that will take over and continue the project that was started with the players already brought in. In stead of making new demands, asking for new players and using new tactical formations, as well as bridging the U23’s over.

Basically, everything Conte is NOT. But Motta could have fit these parameters I think.

    1. and the best coaches they could get are 2 lopategui or fronseca… is that the best they could do out of number of available coaches.

if those 2 average at best coaches are the only ones that can run there project then there project is not something of worth for a team like milan. maybe a mid table team yes but not milan.

so essentially a yes man is what we agree on from the sounds of it. someone whos only vocabulary consists of yes

    2. Motta should have been prefered, but the management contacted him way too late. By the time they thought of sacking Pioli, Juventus had already sealed the deal with him. Also, while he’s not expensive as a coach, I don’t think we would have settled for 2,5M€.
But to think that out of all available coaches, we only went for Lopetegui and Fonseca…

      1. how about Conceição. he would have been a better option then those 2 and the fans would have been satisfied

        1. I did like the idea of Conceição. He wasn’t my favourite but certainly better than either Lopetegui or Fonseca. He is a proven winner.

    3. Motta should have been the first choice for the style of play and his ability to success in rejuvenating Saelemaekers which Piloi couldn’t.

I guess for the management there is a million reasons per year to hire Fonseca instead of Motta, I can’t find any other reason specially that there were contacts and reported negotiations.

      1. The only difference between Fonseca & Motta is that the Portuguese has European experience and Motta doesn’t.

I would be curious to find out why Motta was not a choice. I’m sure financially they work have been comparable.

It has been impressive to see what Motta has been able to achieve at Bologna. But outside of that one season, does his résumé speak more volumes than Fonseca’s?

  5. This Managements kills 1994
Milan is a Club of the Milan working class
    This clowns Kick the history
From This Moment I prefer Napoli, and atalanta

      1. The next season will prove if Milan new coach selection was correct. If Milan finish above Napoli in the league then the correction selection proves them right … otherwise the coach saga will continue until Fonseca is sacked.

  6. the top coach or players he describe is not kind of Carletto/ Pep/ Klop or Maldini/ Gattuso/ Rivera cz they are not yes man, they Champion Man

  7. It’s simple, conte is like mourhino who are not yes men but have a lot at stake. They don’t wanna stain their legacy and we all know conte might ask for lukaku who happens to be ibras number 1 enemy.
Ibrahimovic is arrogant and horrible. That statement means the current coach of Milan is a nobody. I hope he does well.
