Tuttosport: Maignan’s Milan renewal is getting complicated – the details

Mike Maignan’s potential contract renewal with AC Milan is not without complications and work will have to be done on both sides to secure his long-term future, a report claims.

As has been reported by Tuttosport (via Pianeta Milan), the French goalkeeper is not particularly close to signing a new deal with the club at this current moment, but the work is still ongoing.

The complication is not down to Maignan’s desire to continue playing for Milan, it is an economic issue.

The abolition of the Growth Decree, which allowed preferential taxation for Italian clubs in some cases, was something that really benefitted Maignan and the rule change has altered the dynamic of his contract discussions.

If Milan were to grant Maignan the terms that he wants from a renewal, the new rules would mean that Milan have a massive bill to pay the Frenchman, one that the club certainly could not afford.

Milan have been placed in a very tough position because they know that Maignan is one of the most important players in the squad, and Maignan knows it too, but it could be a real struggle to meet his economic demands following the rule change in Serie A.
