Tuttosport: Messias downs Monza as Milan rediscover defensive compactness

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan made it three consecutive 1-0 wins in a row by beating Monza last night as Junior Messias became the latest match-winner.

Tuttosport (via MilanNews) writes that after a month of big defensive issues, the Rossoneri have discovered how beautiful it is to win ugly. After the transition to a three-man defence, combined with the introduction of Malick Thiaw as a start, Stefano Pioli’s team has found compactness and balance in the defensive phase at the expense of looking less attractive on the field.

Milan had not had three consecutive games with clean sheets since April which highlights how much the level of the rearguard had dropped off since the Scudetto run-in late last season.

Ciprian Tatarusanu also confirmed after the match that the switch to a three-man defence has helped: “I have a more compact defence in front of me and it showed in these games.”

If up to 20 days ago every shot was a goal, now the wheel is turning in favour of the Rossoneri. To win you also need a little luck, as in the case of Ciurria’s shot which first hit the post, then Tatarusanu’s leg and then the post again.

Charles De Ketelaere, on the other hand, was less fortunate as the Belgian managed to get a close-range shot blocked by Pessina on the goal line.
