Tuttosport: Milan halt Fofana pursuit – Fiorentina and Palmeiras pair the alternatives

By Oliver Fisher -

The negotiations between AC Milan and Monaco for Youssouf Fofana seemed to be nearing an agreement, but in the last few hours there has been an abrupt slowdown and other targets are now being assessed.

This morning’s edition of Tuttosport (via MilanNews) has a front page which reads: ‘Fofana, Milan wrap it up. Monaco raise the price, target changes. Atletico and United on the Frenchman: they turn to Rios, Amrabat or Rabiot’.

Indeed, Manchester United and Atletico Madrid have emerged on the scene and that is why Monaco now want €35m to sell Fofana. This is a figure considered too high by the Milan management, given that we are talking about a player whose contract expires in less than a year (30 June 2025).

Despite already having an agreement with the Frenchman over personal terms, the Rossoneri could be forced to change their midfield target. Richard Rios of Palmeiras is an option but he would cost €30m, while Sofyana Amrabat – who returned to Fiorentina after his loan at United – is a name to watch.

Milan want a physical midfielder who can help shield the defence, something which the new coach Paulo Fonseca has asked for to guarantee greater protection for the back four. However, they are also working on Lazar Samardzic, who Udinese value at €25m without counterparts.

  1. what the hell is the management doing?
Our squad will not upgrade with cheap options.
Please just do something wise. We need to close the gap with Inter and Juve.

  2. Utter incompetence.

Add to that the fact, while they have wasted an age lowballing to save a mill or 2, the likes of Hojbjerg joined Marseilles, so options are diminishing.

The club is becoming a laughing stock

  3. Amrabat is not an upgrade to Bennacer even if hes more physical.

Rabiot is not a defensive midfielder at all and would ruin the whole wage structure of the club with his demands, and p*ss of Hernandez, Maginan and others if he came in and got paid way more then all of them.

Rio is the only viable option and he would cost 30 mil.

Guess 20 mil for Fofana doesnt seem all that bad now? Could had been wrapped up last week. Expiring contract or not, his market value is at least 30 mil and it will only go up, he would had been a great transfer.

  4. Our management was like “wait, player has only a year of contract, it automatically means they sell him for a pack of cigarettes” aaaand here comes Manchester United with the moneeeeyy hahahahahaha.

This loser board needs to resign and club has to be sold for someone who is more ambitious than Hollywood 🤡 Cardinale

    1. He definitely should have better people around. Honestly, what’s to expect from an ex Portofolio Manager and a Scout in directly making the call on the sporting side.

  5. After ‘saving up’ 25 mil ++ on our main mercato issue (striker), we can’t even close the deal for Fofana. It’s not about how we should milk the negotiation ’till the very last drop of cent as he’s on the last year of contract. As I said on the other news, looking to the fact that we desperately need his role, and other teams’ interest, we’re actually not in the higher bargain position.

  6. We’re almost 4 weeks in the mercato and have only brought in Morata. We saved a ton of money by not buying Zirkzee, so there’s no excuse to not have gotten Fofana when we had the chance early on. We’ve also sold Simic, a young talent. And management is still penny pinching.

  7. This is just embarrassing, honestly. The way we are operating. Using half a month to down pay on a deal that is already a bargain only to lose out. We need to have a tiny bit of integrity before we tarnish the clubs reputation to the point nobody even interested in dealing with us. Imagine what other clubs think

  8. It’s possible Monaco were sounding out other clubs, that’s why they didn’t take Milan’s offer. It’s similar to the Zirkzee situation, Pia was pimping Zirkzee to the EPL. Hopefully management will learn from this and close deals more quickly. When there’s a only a difference of €2-3 million, pay it.

  9. If it’s true that’s an embarrasment. I understand that paying less than what a club is asking is good business, but we need to learn to either close deals more quickly or move on.
We had the player’s agreement for like 3 weeks now, the fact that we still didn’t close the deal despite the player costing LESS than the difference between Zirkzee and Morata is mind boggling.

  10. OMG this management is a JOKE! we are so cheap eventhough we have the healthiest account compare to other serie A clubs..now where are you Maldini haters? hiding in your cave????

  11. Critics of the Management:

Like it or not, this is the way management is moving forward these days. Showing up here day after day with “clowns”, “incompetent”, “Joke” and/or “disgrace” labels isn’t going to change anything 🙂

Why do you do it to yourselves? If this has become a source of so much negativity and stress in your life, why do you continue to allow it to be a part of it?

You can’t change it or affect it, so just change the way you look at it. Because when the season starts, you all will still follow the team and all of this negativity will have solved nothing. 🙂

    As you were.

    1. Love. Especially love for a club, you can’t do anything about it.
One cannot like the management, but the love for the club is impossible to remove.

One can also say the same thing about you. You call some commenters and their takes dumb or lacking any substance, why do you log in here everyday to do that to yourself. Clearly when you know what you are coming to meet??

      Glass houses and all that🤷‍♂️🙂
