Tuttosport: ‘At least four significant moves’ – Milan’s plan for the summer mercato

By Oliver Fisher -

With the Scudetto having vanished and only the Europa League to fight for, the AC Milan management are beginning to plan for the summer in the hopes of getting that second star next season.

This morning’s edition of Tuttosport (via MilanNews) reports that Milan will have to make ‘at least four significant moves’ during the summer transfer window to further improve the squad.

The Rossoneri transfer team – led by Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Geoffrey Moncada, with the support of Antonio D’Ottavio and the supervision of Giorgio Furlani – will have to focus on ironing out the defects of a team whose core was built over the course of the last summer.

The first piece

The main signing that will be made is obviously a new striker. It now seems certain that Olivier Giroud will say goodbye to the Rossoneri at the end of the season and the Frenchman will end his career in MLS, with Los Angeles FC.

The management will have to focus on a solution that can be a guarantee in the medium and long term and the favourite name on the list at the moment is Joshua Zirkzee of Bologna.

Logically, Milan will be led to invest in this role because both the Dutchman from Bologna and the other candidates are expensive. Benjamin Sesko, Viktor Gyokeres and Santiago Gimenez would all cost a lot too.

The less expensive solutions could be the historic target Jonathan David, whose contract with Lille expires in 2025, as well as Serhou Guirassy who has a release clause that is not too high.

The other three

Tuttosport then identifies at least three other roles in which Milan would need to strengthen their squad. It starts from the midfield, with Khéphren Thuram of OGC Nice and Youssouf Fofana of Monaco on the list.

The identikit is clear: the Rossoneri are looking for a defensive midfielder who can rebalance a department that has appeared unbalanced – especially in transition – too many times during the season.

Then Moncada and co. will go on the hunt for a central defender, especially after the physical fragility of which Milan have been victims this year. Furthermore, Simon Kjaer’s contract will expire and therefore he could leave.

One name that has been mentioned is Benoit Badiashile, who has found little playing time at Chelsea this last season. Finally, the last piece could be a deputy to Theo Hernandez, a role that was not filled last summer.

  1. This is what we need
    1. A new striker
    2. Deputy to that striker
    3. Defensive midfielder
    4. Centreback because apperantly ours break like glas.
    5. Deputy to Theo
    6. A new right back. We need Calabria out of here.

      1. Why, because he is pointing out areas that need to be filled/upgraded? Or because he isn’t a fan of Calabria and you take it personally?

What a ridiculous response from you.

Calabria has not shown any signs of improvement and is technically in his prime. So yeah, makes perfect sense to try to find an upgrade and improve the RB position.

He isn’t getting any calls to La Nazionale either, by the way.

        1. Calabria’s limitations has shown over the years,we know he is not worthy of La Nazionale,i think Bellanova would be an upgrade at Right back..The most important is a quality central forward with great personality,it is a shame that we lost some viable points against lower teams which spoiled the scudetto race now…forza Milan

    1. 💯💯💯

It’s kinda funny the hometown bias some members of this forum have for Calabria. If he wasn’t Italian I doubt they would be so adamant on him remaining a starter let alone captain.

In truth he is a solid player (and personally I like him) and capable backup and should be retained at a modest fee. However he is NOT a starter and should NOT be our Captain. He is very limited offensively and in today’s game we need more out of that position. He’s the perfect backup and occasional starter IMO. But everyday starter and Captain – we need an upgrade

    1. A backup left-back and someone to compete with Calabria would be ideal, but ik not sure if we have the funds/time

      1. Exactly. Why did we get Pulisic when we already had Saelemaekers and Messias? If we still had the latter two we’d be in first place right now. s/

  2. Milan are in the habit of finding solutions where not existed. Wait till they see Jovic as the heir apparent to Giroud and Adli as the new DM, especially when they don’t want to spend. Unless we have another sacrificial lamb (maybe a Bennacer) i am not holding my breath for a big summer…At best we will get Jonathan David and the rest of the cards will be shovelled around to stop the gaps (Terraciano as deputy for Theo, Florenzi as cover for Calabria, etc…)

    1. Nothing wrong with finding existing solutions from within although Adli is possibly the worst midfielder who has ever played for Milan….

      1. Maldinis Heir

Why don’t you go and support a team that has players that meet your standards?

        Ain’t this you?
Or it’s the other @Maldini’s Heir living in your head?

  3. No one mentions backup DM along with a starting DM. It’s a position we don’t have neither a starter or a backup. Or is Adli going to carry that deputy DM role?

    1. If we have a good DM, Adli or Bennacer can relieve them from time to time.
DM, Adli, Bennacer, RLC, Reijnders, Musah that’s 6 players for 3 positions plus the Primavera guys.

Sign a striker and keep Jovic, Okafor can also play.
Im not really concerned about full backs or centre backs as we have options. As always keep an eye out for opportunities, like out of contract players to fill gaps

    2. I’d prefer to sign one very good DM and wing it with Bennacer, Musah and Reijnders.

I’d sell Adli and unfortunately Pobega.

  4. “only the Europa League to fight for”?? What are you talking about? Retaining second place is a big challenge and a big goal. We don’t get this for free, we can’t sit back just yet.
