Tuttosport: Milan and Inter could swap San Siro for Mapei Stadium in 2026 – the reason

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan and Inter may well end up playing some home games away from San Siro during the 2025-26 season due to the Winter Olympics, according to a report.

The issue of the renovation of San Siro continues to take centre stage , with Milan and Inter expected to deliver the joint list of requested interventions to WeBuild immediately after Easter, then the construction firm will present a complete project by June.

According to Tuttosport (via MilanNews), there is a significant issue that the two clubs will have to face: the Rossoneri and the Nerazzurri will in fact have to study an alternative to San Siro for the home matches in the three weeks preceding the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics.

That ceremony is scheduled for the 6 February 2026, and this could impact three games, namely the last two games in the new format of the Champions League ‘league’ phase, as well as at least one league match each.

Milan and Inter have not yet announced where they will play those matches, but a concrete hypothesis could be Reggio Emilia. More specifically, the paper is referring to the Mapei Stadium which currently hosts Sassuolo of Serie A and Reggiana of Serie B.

The stadium holds 21,525 and was built in 1995, replacing the Stadio Mirabello. Therefore, the two Milanese clubs would have to accept a greatly reduced capacity.
