Tuttosport: Milan eye Monza man as potential Maignan replacement – the price tag

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan are working on the contract renewal of Mike Maignan, whose contract will expire in 2026, but the negotiations could be tough for the Rossoneri. Therefore, as a report claims, their Plan B appears to be Monza’s Di Gregorio.

Maignan joined Milan back in 2021 to replace Gogio Donnarumma and has since been one of the best goalkeepers in the league. It’s not exactly surprising, therefore, that the Rossoneri are keen on renewing his contract.

According to today’s edition of Tuttosport (see photo below), Milan have started talks with Maignan and his entourage but it could be a long negotiation. The goalkeeper has made it clear that he wants at least €8m per year, which would be even more than Rafael Leao.

Milan are optimistic that a middle ground can be found in the negotiations but they are also prepared for the worst-case scenario. Indeed, they are keeping tabs on Monza’s goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio, who has a price tag of €20m as per the newspaper.

The 26-year-old has impressed with Rafaelle Palladino’s side and is also Italian, which is always beneficial given the squad regulations. However, as already stated, Milan’s primary goal is absolutely to renew Maignan even though a sale cannot be ruled out.

  1. Thats Business, bye bye Mike, hope you do not move to psg and stay without a trophy just because of the money. Milan plz sell him next year to avoid the free Transfer.

  2. Red Turds going to sell Mike this summer and go with the cheaper option. That’s how they work. And you know they’ll try and get that 20 mil price down as low as possible. Please sell us. Americans don’t belong in football.

    1. There’s just no way to pay Mike 8mil per season. Even Leao makes less. Either Miker believes in Milan’s project beyond his wages, or he moves on. just Football 101 these days.

Has nothing to do with Americans. Some folks with a one-track mind here, I swear…

  3. There’s statistics you can measure and there are factors you cannot. Maignan has been one of the undisputed leaders of the team mentally, a leader that we are currently short of. And in football it’s unwritten rule – when keeper performs, whole team does. Remeber when we had Tatarusanu between the posts. Yeah. So moneyball can give us statistically comparable player but algorithms cannot predict if one will settle into the squad. And that goes for all signings.

    1. Algorithms can’t convince players to accept a contract offer that is below their expectations but at the top of the clubs limit, either.

Here’s hoping – as the article states is still the plan, that a deal can be struck. If not, Di Gregorio should absolutely be a consideration.

  4. It all depends on the amount of offers of interested clubs, and of course, on his aspirations personally ! It’s hard to blame someone for wanting to make more money. If there is a situation where an offer comes in and he wants to leave, it is up to the management of the club to charge it as best as possible! It’s not good that we lose the best players, but it’s also not a disaster to sell a player for three or four times as much money as we paid for it !

    1. True but at the same time when you sell your stars you make sure the replacement you buy is in the same quality. Di Gregorio isn’t even close to Maignan quality. Better try Meslier Lafont try for Ramsdale Youngster like Restes that fought Liverpool very well. Maybe Brice Samba Carnasechi Trapp Matej Kovar Livakovic But no Di Gregorio

  5. Paying a goalkeeper 8m per season is the dumbest thing ever. Mike Maignan is the most injury prone goalkeeper on planet earth and he is on a decline as well. He’s not the same goalkeeper Milan signed when we replaced Dollarumma.

Di Gregorio is ok. Meret is on his last year of his contract with Napoli. We should go for Meret or bring in either South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams or Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali who we can sign for less than 20m. They are 2 of the best goalkeepers around.

  6. I rather stick with Sportiello in that case. Di Gregorio stated many times he’d like to return one day to Inter and he never hid his affection for them.
