Tuttosport: Milan player ratings for Cagliari win – most praised but Chukwueze criticised

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan made it five wins out of six in the league last night as they beat Cagliari 3-1 in Sardinia, coming from behind in the game.

Tuttosport (via PianetaMilan) has their ratings from the game, starting with Marco Sportiello who perhaps should have done better for the goal but made a good save on Oristanio in the second half, earning a 6 out of 10.

Theo Hernandez had a ‘few flashes’ but not much more so he also got a 6, while Fikayo Tomori was ‘the only one of his team to stop Luvumbo in the open field’ and scored what ended up being the winner, getting a 7.

Malick Thiaw had a very physical duel with Petagna and he ‘didn’t lose it’, so got a 6.5, while Alessandro Florenzi played the right-back role ‘with order’, receiving a 6.

Tijjani Reijnders got a 6.5, with the following comment: “When he lights up, it’s a different Milan – faster, more attacking, more vertical. Him coming off was a surprise, perhaps to avoid exhaustion.”

Yacine Adli got a 6 for his ‘recovered balls and forward passes’ but he ‘tarnished the performance by losing the ball which gave rise to the 1-0’, though he did produce an excellent block on Luvumbo in the second half. Tommaso Pobega replaced him, and got a 5.5 for losing a few balls.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek seemed to be having a mixed night and could have come off in the second half but he stayed on and scored the 3-1 goal with a strike from distance, scoring a 6.5.

Samuel Chukwueze had space and was often found with the ball but he did little to hurt Cagliari in the eyes of the paper, getting a score of 5.5 as his replacement Luka Romero did too.

Noah Okafor ‘struggled to juggle Cagliari’s powerful centre-backs, he had two chances, but he was not clinical cynical, then he was quick to exploit Radunovic’s gift’. Rating: 6.5.

Christian Pulisic struggled for 40 minutes, then ‘he wakes up and creates the three actions from which the goals arise’. He got a rating of 7, while Rafael Leao replaced him and was ‘soft’, scoring a 5.5.

Stefano Pioli got a 6.5 for his management of the game. The quick one-two punch at the end of the first half changed a match that was becoming complicated.

  1. Chukwueze showed great technique and attacking ability on right flank and was very active compared to Saelemaekers and Messias combined.

We don’t need him to assist and score goals if ke keeps to pressure opponent defence like last night.

    1. as a winger his job is to score and assist otherwise why did we spend money on him? Could have just kept Salad and put 20M + bonuses towards a dm or st

      1. You look collective result and not single player stats.

Kevin de bruyne have scored much more goals and assists than Luka Modric. But Luka team work gaind so much more trophies that De Bruyne could not reach in 3 life time.

      2. So if you keep salad you would have bad results because he couldn’t push defence on right flank like Chukwueze did last night.

That opened space for Pulisic on left flank after 30 minutes of game.

        1. did you watch the same match as me? i doubt it. Cagliari was tight on the left and on the right all the time. There was no making space by pushing on one side… They always had 3 people watching the left and the right. Thats the whole point of the tactic when you sit back and prey on counters..

And just between me and you and the forum, Salad and Messias did excatly what Chukwueze did yesterday. Make their presenc known but have little effect on the scoreline

      3. I don’t know what people see in Chukwueze. I was never impressed with his signings from what highlights I saw of him. He can curl a shot with his left foot, but so could Messias. All I see an over-glorified Castillejo. Samu has no end product, so fas that I have seen of him. He can only cut on the inside and is not good at crosses or assists either.
A better RW would have been Luvumbo, who kept causing problems for Milan defense/GK at every given attack, and would have cost half of the price.

    2. Wrong. That’s exactly what we need from a winger. I don’t get people being impressed by fancy dribbling that leads to nothing. It’s the equivalent of somebody that talks a whole lot without really saying anything.

  2. I agree with pretty much all of these. I think Pioli gets 6.5 for the result, but not for tactical in-game changes – he seems to struggle with the right substiutions.
I was impressed with Okafor. I think he gives our attack something different than a pure target man. He did everything Giroud does but with a bit more precision in his hold up and distribution. Chuck was a little disappointing. I thought he would be more dangerous against this opponent.

  3. Chuk was disappointing in my opinion. He lacks the vision to participate in final third. Or maybe he’s just trying to impress so much. All he does is forcing dribbles when there were better options. Saw on couple of occasions last night where both Reijnders and RLC were running inside the box for a through pass but Chuk didn’t even bother to raise his head and search for a pass. Instead he opted to dribble and failed. He was doing same in his previous match so it’s a repeating pattern. And that’s concerning. Romero was more involved in collective actions and play in his few minutes than Chuk in his two matches.

  4. The fact is we won this game as I thought we would .
The fact is I said we can win the scuddeto this season .
The fact is inter Milan lost which I told you all it would happen soon ,,,yes they beat us ,but the got the tactics right against us ..
The fact is we need Olivier Giroud…you don’t listen but you should ..I have been evolved with football ⚽️ for a long time …Yes Olivier will score 20 goals this season ….
The fact is we have a great squad to choose from now and all players must be rested from time to time .
The fact is we have a great midfield in Loftus cheek .He is very strong physical tall and a great tackler.
I also told you he could score goals ..
I told you that he could be our player of the season ,,just as Olivier Giroud was two seasons ago.
The fact I also told you that pulisic was a very good buy …He will score goals and create plenty .
The fact ..We have a great manager in pioli..
I don’t know why so many of you so called fans ,,lack so much belief…Can we win the scuddeto,,of course we can …Fact… I told you so at the beginning of the season ….

    1. I said, I told you, I, I,I…
Who gives a F. Who the F are you that anyone should care?
Your facts are opinions, and like a**holes, everybody’s got one.

  5. What do you expect from chukwueze when Milan plays a slow attacking game?

They always allow the opposition back into their defensive shape before passing the ball forward, there’s nothing chukwueze can do if he always has to face a packed bus infront of goal

With 3 fast, dynamic and ball playing forwards like pulisic, okafor, and chukwueze, I thought we were going to break fast on the counter and create 1v1’s, but pioli chooses to let the opponent regroup Everytime then start passing the ball around and expecting magic from the front!

    1. Finally someone said it
For the life of me I can’t understand when they have so many opportunities to break they will pass it around in the back….let the opposition get time to settle and then try to pass them to death. I think pioli wants to have an award for having march possession

  6. Great game, good response from our guys. Rotation was good for the team. No bench-warming. Everyone will grow with belief. A little work to be done, here and there. We lost to Inter, but, the guys have to keep believing in another Scudetto. Milan can beat other teams in the league with their second team, but, Inter will struggle to do that. If we are steady, and consistent, we will slowly pull away from the rest.
