Tuttosport: Milan’s season crashes and burns in Rome – Pioli’s fate seems sealed

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan once again failed to show up in yet another big game this season and now Stefano Pioli seems to have reached the end of the road, a report claims.

As Tuttosport (via MilanNews) writes, Milan’s season ended last night. The Rossoneri also lost in the return leg against Roma who deservedly secured their place in the semi-finals of the competition, where they will face German champions Bayer Leverkusen.

It is a ‘huge disappointment’ for the Diavolo who are now just fighting for second place in the league, and the derby against Inter is scheduled for Monday which now feels daunting given they would clinch the Scudetto with a win.

Last night at the end of the match the team had a discussion with the fans present in the sold out away sector at the Olimpico, who reminded the players of the importance of Monday’s match given the five derby losses in a row.

With yesterday’s elimination, the paper states that – barring sensational surprises – Pioli has probably now given up his last chance of having a future as head coach of Milan. The coach still has one year left on his contract, but the writing is on the way.

“The distance from Inter in the league, the premature elimination from the Champions League and also the schooling from De Rossi are charges that are difficult to answer offer sufficiently convincing reasons in favour of permanence,” Tuttosport state.

Those who expected an aggressive start to the match from Milan and a solid game plan immediately had to change their minds. After 22 minutes they were 2-0 down, and though Roma went down to 10 men in the 31st minute, they fully exploited their man advantage.

Matteo Gabbia’s goal arrived a few minutes before the final whistle after what felt like dozens of aimless cross, but it didn’t change things. The elimination hurts a lot and seems to have put an end to Pioli’s time on the bench.
