Tuttosport: Pioli has two selection doubts to resolve ahead of Salzburg game

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli has two selection doubts to resolve ahead of tomorrow night’s game against Red Bull Salzburg, a report claims.

As reported by Tuttosport (via MilanNews), we are moving towards the confirmation of the team that started the derby but there are a couple of positions where Pioli is thinking about changes.

The first concerns the role of central attacking midfielder behind Olivier Giroud and the battle is between Charles De Ketelaere – who played as a starter against Inter – and Brahim Diaz.

The second is a familiar duel between Junior Messias and Alexis Saelemaekers for the right wing position. Ante Rebic is injured so Rafael Leao – fresh from two goals and an assist in the derby – will start on the left.

Ahead of Mike Maignan will be Davide Calabria, Pierre Kalulu, Fikayo Tomori and Theo Hernandez. In the middle of the field, the double pivot of Sandro Tonali and Ismael Bennacer should also remain.

    1. It’s not obsession but that’s how Pioli treats his players especially the young ones.

Pioli always give them respect, chances, and times to improves. These players are humans, NOT machine where you can replace them easily if they didn’t play well!

Look at Kalulu, Theo, Tonali, Bennacer, and Leao. Their first season wasn’t impressive and full of mistakes. But Pioli trust them and gave them a lot of chance to improve. Now look at them right now; they plays impressive, bring Milan back to Champions League, and also a scudetto after 11 years.

We’re lucky with Pioli as Milan coach because if we got Conte, Allegri, Mourinho, Simone Inzaghi, or Rangnick cause those coaches definitely doesn’t want young players like Tonali, Kalulu, Theo, Leao, or Benna.

      1. All of the players you mentioned were ok in their first season and very good in the second. Diaz was never ok, and even got worse in his second season. You give chances to someone who shows potential and signs of improvement. Diaz is the opposite.

        1. But I also agree with @A🤔

I think Pioli chose players that were in the existing system over new ones bar Dest who’s there because of the need for a backup

        2. @A

No their first season wasn’t ok. They did well at some matches but overall they didn’t played well and it’s normal for first season.

You should rewatch Milan 2019/20 matches for Theo, Bennacer, and Leao and 20/21 matches for Kalulu and Tonali to refresh your memory. Remember when Milan got washed 5-0 by Atalanta?

And Diaz actually played really well at early second season until he got covid + long injury. That’s why Pioli gave him another chance this season to proof himself.

If Pioli give his players chance to improves then why as a Milan fans we didn’t do the same?

As long as Diaz wearing Milan shirts and scoring goals / assist to help Milan win, i will keep supporting him.

  1. This brahim is like a curse that doesn’t want to go, how can we have Adli who is owned already and still play Diaz who is onloan and will never be bought??? This is ridiculous and unfair, that dwarf have had more than 2 seasons with the number on his back and yet he can’t do anything….. immediately he came on in the derby, inter smiled and started attacking us, Adli is faaaaaaaaaaaar better than this guy, I just hope this stupid act of pioli doesn’t affect Adli growth

    1. I understand that you are frustrated but take it easy a little. Adli needs to be eased into the game system and will be in the squad soon. As for Ibrahim, he hasn’t justified the #10 but he’s still very young. Can be used as a good substitute.

    2. At this point, Bakayoko is even better than Brahim Diaz.

But seriously why would Diaz be registered for UCL at the expense of Adli? It doesn’t make sense. There’s a reason Pep and City let him go to Madrid. Now Madrid knows he has no future with the Los Blancos, but they’re hoping Milan or any team would sign, so they can recoup what the spent on Jim thinking he was going to explode.

    3. “immediately he came on in the derby, inter smiled and started attacking us”

Did you even watch the match?

The reason why Inter can put pressure at the last 20 minutes wasn’t because Diaz came in but the whole Milan starter already tired from pressing Inter for 70 minutes. Milan slow down the tempo and just wait for counter attack and at that moment Inter gain more momentum.

Inter second goal wasn’t even because Diaz didn’t do his job but because Calabria, Messias, and Tomori didn’t mark Darmian, Mikitariyan, and Dzeko properly.

So how the fvck you blame Diaz?

Also, you overhyped Adli too much. He’s not way better than Diaz. Pioli played Adli for 38 minutes as playmaker against Sassuolo but he didn’t give much impact whatsoever. You should slow down with your expectations as if Adli is some kind of genius that born every 100 years lol.

  2. Relax dude , why angry brahim choosen for CL than adili. Brahim help squad last season scudetto & familiar with coach system . What adili contribution last season? Did he already understand pioli system also italian languange? If adili flop causing AC Milan losing in CL then you all will be shout loudly pioli out in frontline. Let pioli decide which player he want to register, commentator here can play your favourite adili in football manager

  3. I dont understand why people so anti brahim. He had very solid much against inter (better then charles…) He got few good pass to origi. Everynow and then he even have great games.. Im not claiming he should be a regylar starter but he is good enoght for the rotation

  4. I too would like to see Kjaer play more — not sure if he’s quite yet fit enough to play the full 90 minutes so maybe that’s why he’s not starting. But it was VERY nice and encouraging to see Pioli take out Calabria and move Kalulu over to RightBack, his original position.

Once Kjaer is fit enough to play 90 minutes, then start Kalulu at RB and bench Calabria (as much as I love him — he’s a Milan man thru and thru; but he’s TOO SLOW and can’t deliver crosses as well as Kalulu).

Theo–Kjaer–Tomori–Kalulu back 4 would be fantastic. Kalulu has great recovery speed; but he also LOVES to be very aggressive and come up to try to intercept passes and make tackles which is risky. If he’s a RB, then it’s better for him to take risks there while Tomori and Kjaer are in the middle.
