Tuttosport: Pioli leaning on alternative formation to the 4-2-3-1 while waiting for signings

By Oliver Fisher -

Yet another report has emerged suggesting AC Milan could begin the new season with a different formation to the 4-2-3-1 established.

According to this morning’s edition of Tuttosport (via MilanNews), head coach Stefano Pioli has identified the 4-4-2 as the one to follow decisively while waiting for further reinforcements from the transfer market, given that another playmaker has not yet arrived in addition to Brahim Diaz’s return.

During the most recent friendlies, the 4-4-2 saw Olivier Giroud joined by Ante Rebic up front as the two strikes with Rafael Leao playing more of a wide left role, a combination which gave good signals and laid the foundations for the reintegration of Zlatan Ibrahimovic alongside the Frenchman.

Pioli knows the importance of having an attacking midfielder but he knows that it is equally important to make virtue out of necessity, which is why he is testing some alternative ideas so as not to make his side predictable.
