Tuttosport: Six of AC Milan’s rearguard at risk of summer exit but there is one certainty

By Oliver Fisher -

Like seemingly most areas of the squad, a number of AC Milan defenders face an uncertain future which could lead to a revolution this summer.

As MilanNews reports (citing Tuttosport), a group of players could leave the club in the upcoming window, from Mateo Musacchio to Simon Kjaer and Alessio Romagnoli, without forgetting Davide Calabria, Andrea Conti and even goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Despite this, there is one certainty for next season: Matteo Gabbia. In the last three games – before the Coronavirus emergency imposed a stop to the season – the young centre-back had established himself as a starter having jumped at the chance following Kjaer and Musacchio’s injuries.

Gabbia spent months in a row on the bench after Milan decided to keep him around and not loan him out until finally Stefano Pioli put his faith in him. The head coach saw his faith rewarded, as now Gabbia is considered one of the pillars that the new ‘young Milan’ can be built around.

The 20-year-old extended his contract on 28 February, also accepting a pay rise as part of the deal, something which shows the club’s intentions regarding the future of the Italy U21 international.
