Tuttosport: The three issues Fonseca must tackle if he is named Milan boss

By Euan Burns -

Paulo Fonseca is the coach AC Milan have chosen to succeed Stefano Pioli this summer but he has three issues that he must tackle if there is to be any success.

As reported by Tuttosport (via Milan News), the Portuguese coach will have a job on his hands if he is to take Milan to the top of the Serie A table and make them a force in Europe next season.

One of the major issues that Milan now have is that there is a disconnect between the fanbase and the RedBird ownership, thanks to a perceived lack of ambition.

Only a successful start under Fonseca can change that, as fans need to see evidence that Milan are in the mix for trophies.

Another major issue this season has been the sheer number of injuries, and Fonseca will not be successful if that problem is not addressed straight away. The defensive injuries have been particularly problematic and cannot be explained simply with bad luck.

The final problem is the lack of defensive balance in the team, which would perhaps be helped by less injuries in that part of the squad.

Milan have been very easy to get at in Serie A this season, conceding more than everyone else in the top half except for Napoli who are 10th.

  1. The first issue he need to tackle would be the fans disappointment because he was hired as a Milan coach.
What a disgrace that Milan is competing with a team like Marseille over a coach.

Did anyone from the stupid management watch what happened with Roma under Noneseca, Pioli destroyed him with Laxalt, Borini and Piatek Milan and finished the season 4 points away from Roma after joining win less milan at the time in October.

    1. Obviously the management has not taken stock of this Man at Roma at all….. Roma became a shamble and a laugh over during his regime as coach, he was even sacked half way of the season….. Redbird will be stupid to hire him just because of a season turnaround in Lille?? What a joke.

  2. He may also be the coach associated with the sale of Theo. Of course at This stage it’s all rumours but if he comes in and on the basis that he wouldn’t ask questions and Theo goes….

    Good luck with that mate

  3. “One of the major issues that Milan now have is that there is a disconnect between the fanbase and the RedBird ownership, thanks to a perceived lack of ambition.”

And Cardinale wants to tackle this with hiring Fonseca. What a prankster.

  4. ok so No to Fonseca, No to Lopetegui, give me names of coaches you guys would hire? Be realistic, Our current position only allows us to pay 3-4M a year. So, That leaves out Zerbi, Nagglesman, Tuchel and Pochettino’s of the world. Let alone the true elite Klopps of the world. Our reality is we will take a gamble on someone. Similar to Leverkusen giving Alonso the chance, Guardiola when he took over Barcelona, Zidane in Madrid etc. They were unproven and the clubs took a gamble. It is about knowing the right gamble. We took it with Pippo and Seedorf (and even Gatusso) and did not work. Whoever we pick, i will support him.

    1. I am happy with either Fonseca, Lopetegui or Pioli. Our project is roughly where it should be at this point, the step from top 4 club to serial champion is a pretty big one which even Inter with doggy finances haven’t pulled off. The negativity is annoying.

  5. milan management are bunch of idiots.. thy always it on a cheap to achieve first grade. its very simple , if you want to win trophy get the best tools

  6. Next season we have no chance finishing in top 4 juve getting stronger roma getting stronger even napoli it’s getting stronger we have no chance.
