Tuttosport: ‘Turned the world upside down’ – Milan reluctant to spend with funds available

The Serie A season begins this weekend, and it can be argued that AC Milan are still not a finished article. Nevertheless, there is still time to make additions, and the next few weeks could be very busy.

Looking at the mercato so far, there can be a lot of positives taken. Milan have signed a fantastic striker in Alvaro Morata, who will make a massive difference at the top end of the pitch and provide leadership qualities.

Additionally, the signings of Emerson Royal and Strahinja Pavlovic will strengthen the side, and the defence, which was a requirement after last season. However, one area still needs work, and this is known.

In midfield, there is still a lack of balance, and it must be solved during this mercato, by Youssouf Fofana, or someone else, and this is known by the club as Zlatan Ibrahimovic referred to signing another midfielder in the welcome press conference for Emerson.

However, there has also been controversy because of his statements, specifically about Gerry Cardinale’s request to ‘spend more’ but Ibra would prefer to operate in a different way.

As Tuttosport (via Milan News) writes, this has ‘turned the world upside down’ as the funds are there to move, but there is seemingly a refusal to spend it leaving some to question why the Diavolo are reluctant to make the moves they desire, if they are viable.

  1. This is all smokescreens and PR stutns.

They’re gonna say they have funds meanwhile negotiating over 3-5M for weeks, month?

And if we have funds why are we signing the likes of Emerson? Or even Pavlo?

If you have funds and you want to win, want to build a competitive team, you wanna buy the best you can, right? I mean isn’t that just common sense?

    1. The more I mull it over, the more I’m beginning to think that even if the funds are there, they won’t ever spend big. Now giving Redbird the benefit of the doubt, this could be because of what is coming down the pipeline….what we’ve seen from Liberali, Zeroli and Toriani in pre season is nothing short of spectacular. There’s also Camarda and Cuenca and others. If this is the case then I’m kind of on board with Redbird.

I’m not going to drag up the Morata conversation again, he’s here so he now one of us, but I think we could have recruited better there from the standpoint of goals. Emerson I don’t get but am open to be proven wrong. Pavlovic I’m on board with as he a young talent with what looks like big potential. I’d have preferred Buongiorno but it is why it is.

However Redbird are assuming that Milan fans are going to be able to square the circle of ‘top 4 with a possible trophy’ in the meantime.

      1. We have a 35M NET Transfer Cap per year. That will NOT change anytime soon – maybe until (if ever) we build our own stadium. That is all. So ya we will NOT spend big on ANY player – that is the policy

        1. But that policy has a shelf life….eventually we will get left behind, and it isn’t going to get us back to the top where Cardinale says ‘allegedly’ he sees us. I get it if the focus is on futuro and youth, but even those sides that had huge success based on youth like Milan, United and Barca still added big signings to take those already great sides to the next level. The theory of you don’t need to spend big to get quality is a fallacy, quality demands competition which in turn drives prices up.

        2. How are they signing morata + pavlo + emerson + fofana if ACM only have 35m euro ??? So far they only sell simic 3m euro while atalanta pay CDK transfer fee on february 2025 & salad still stay . Morata 13m euro + pavlo 18m euro + emerson 15m euro + fofana 20m euro = 66m euro . Even if fofana fail that still 46m euro , but according to fabrizio romano fofana just one step away to ACM only different about difficult bonuses unlock .Last season they depend on tonali sale 70m euro but this season so far ACM only sell simic 3m euro and all of the purchase are cash . Look at juve this season sell so many their youngster to get 94m euro but yet they still only want kalulu on loan if juve pay cash 20m euro kalulu then ACM can still buy lazar without waiting to sell adili first

      1. No, he is not saying spend big but what we can.

Rather than waiting for big discounts buy the best we can not 10 signings but 5best with the money we have.

        1. I agree. It would be nice to take a bunch of the ~10M players we have that don’t play and turn those funds into a 40M player that can actually improve the team. Also unless a player is top top level, it takes a whole preseason for them to click, so you end up paying for that discount and then some one way or another.

When Galliani founded the last min baragin Mr. X colpo, those guys were established players and household names and it generally worked out in the end. Players like Chuky or Fofana are not that.

          1. Pavlovic is a clear upgrade to our team and he was 18 million. Many other teams would have paid 25-30 million for him, maybe even more. So what’s the issue here?

    2. Exactly.

IF we had owners that wanted to spend we would be after better quality of players and NOT just who we can get under 20M

If ANY of the players we have signed (Morata, Pavlo, Emerson) cost 25, 30M – they wouldn’t be wearing our jersey

        1. I guess you have trouble reading kid lol. Read what I said buddy. See if you can comprehend. Go slow, take a deep breath and relax. It may help if you get your head out of Gerry’s arse 😂😂😂

      1. We signed Theo for around 20M, meanwhile Chelsea signed Chilwell for 50M a year after.
I can categorically say Theo is among the world’s best three or four left backs.
Price sometimes doesn’t necessarily mean quality.
Maybe by your sentiments, we should have signed Chilwell because he costs more, hence represents more quality.

        1. 💯💯💯 agreed my friend.

But Gerry is not interested in winning “TITLES” – that costs lots of $$. Redbird are interested in being competitive (Furlani said as much – goal is to qualify for UCL) – so that keeps up the PROFIT. Big difference.

Teams that CONSISTENTLY win titles are rarely profitable. It’s almost impossible in today’s market. So ya a 35M NET transfer spend is a joke IF and ONLY IF you wanna win trophies – BUT unfortunately that is not what this ownership/management is seeking.

          1. Fortunately or unfortunately, this is our reality. Unless you want us get owned by some Arab money.
Even the great Berlusconi couldn’t meet up the standards he set for our club, he had to sell.

I mean who wouldn’t want us to be bidding for Halaand and Mbappe? Common!

But, as a core football lover, I would say the generic growth is sweeter than some money bag buying victory. Imagine winning our last Scudetto with Giroud, it tastes sweeter than with Halaand and a star studded team bought rather than grown or developed in the team. It shows that football isn’t all about money, hence, B. Dortmond has no business winning the Bundesliga.

We gotta start from somewhere my friend, I see growth. Just a little patience, I know we all love the club.

      2. This guy will vanish the moment Milan win something I can guarantee that

He has so much fun wishing ill upon Milan and praying they lose every game its kinda cringe

    3. That’s the dumbest crap I read all year. You are profoundly dumb man. Do you even football bro? You are not a fan and are fat and bald ahahaha

  2. That was just an Ibra stunt. There’s no “spend more money” talk at Milan. There’s a lot of “spend responsibly” talk though.

  3. pavlo isnt to bad of a signing but emerson? im not hating on him but they are at leas 10 rb we could have gotten maybe 5-10 million more expensive but still

    1. Depends on the player. A 30-40M could be a wise move for the right player. Would Milan even consider it?
Let say Milan has 35M, and they can get Ederson right now for that money and he is exactly the type of midfielder we need. Would they do it or just buy two 17.5M a player players?

      1. Yes. Absolutely. Milan should have spent 30 million on Pavlovic, then you would sleep better at night. Your logic makes perfect sense. I’m totally convinced lol. Pavlovic is terrible at 18 million.

        1. You do now you’re making a strawman here, right?
Nobody said anything about pavlo and his purchase price.
I did mention pavlo in ‘would he be a target, if we had proper funds’ way…

      2. You people really love judging early and making wild comments and when you get called out on the bullsh*t prediction later in the year you will ignore it or try to claim otherwise lmao

Will never forget the insane fanboyism for De Zerbi and Motta

        1. And you are judging Motta and De Zerbi off what? Few preseason games?

Talk about judging early, wait at least until January to see if we got what we needed in coach. We all wish our team best and we support it. Now, supporting management and their program is a whole different thing. You need to distinguish between supporting the team and ownership/management. United fans are clear example.

          1. should apologise for posting dumb sh*t and making a toxic environment for no reason

Motta and De Zerbi being treated like gods is cringe and you know that

  4. Pavlovic would have been a better signing if we signed him at 35 million. What a failure by management for not overspending!

  5. It’s 1 thing being a fun and another responsibility for being part of management. I only desire management sign talented players that can help Milan get back to the top, not how much or less. To understand the kind of player Milan needs is different from the player Milan wants. Forza Milan

  6. easy
Milan just dont have the room for new players
need to sell some, and get room for players

Milan expected to sell adli or bennacer this window. Adli refused to move, bennacer, not sure. Morata transfer is easy as it is direct replacement. others, need to wait

  7. Having the funds to spend doesn’t mean you spend for the sake of spending. Teams like Man United, Chelsea, PSG to name a few have spent billions of dollars in the transfer market and they have absolutely NOTHING to show for it.

So I don’t agree that Milan should spend because funds are available. Milan are signing players at bragain prices.

Some of these players had a year left on their contract like Pulisic, Loftus Cheek, Chukwueze, Fofana (who will arrive).

We are also sign players for their actual market value and not for some INFLATED VALUE like Zirkzee who is not worth more than 20m.

Spending big doesn’t automatically mean success. As a matter of fact majority of teams that spend big end up in failure.

Inter Milan sign players for free but they are paying ridiculous salaries and commissions to players and agents.

For all the naysayers and Cardinale haters, they have spend more on the transfer market than our previous owners Elliott Vulture Fund.

Milan need a sustainable project and it will take time to build a strong team to compete for champions league which Inter, Man City, Chelsea, Man United DID NOT win last season.

These teams spent more than Real Madrid and Atalanta last season and they have no European trophies to show for it.

Be patient. The club is signing the players that Fonseca want to strengthen the team. They are not selling off our best players.
