Di Marzio: Union Berlin star opts for free transfer – Milan and Dortmund in contact

AC Milan have been linked with a move for Diogo Leite before, but this summer could provide the perfect opportunity to land him.

Barring any dramatic collapses, Milan will be able to count on a budget boosted by Champions League revenues to strengthen their squad ahead of 2026-27. This doesn’t mean, however, that the management can splash out on every role they need.

The Rossoneri management are evaluating a low-cost defensive profile that would potentially cover multiple roles and save money for other departments.

Leite back in the limelight

According to what Di Marzio has told Sky (via 90min), the player in question is Diogo Leite, a Portuguese centre-back. After four years at Union Berlin, he has decided not to renew his contract which expires in June, to seek new challenges elsewhere.

Besides the financial aspect, given that he can be signed on a free transfer, Milan also like Leite for tactical reasons. Throughout his career, he has been used both in a back four and as a centre-back in a three-man defence.

This versatility would be useful for the Rossoneri, though when it comes to players whose contracts are expiring, the competition is fierce. Leite is no exception, and his entourage have already been contacted by several clubs.

The club that has shown the most interest so far is Borussia Dortmund, but other Serie A clubs like Lazio and Fiorentina are also on the hunt. If they don’t want to lose out on a free transfer, Milan will have to speed up the process and try agree a pre-contract.

Previously flattered

As a reminder, Milan were linked with Leite in 2024 and the player was even asked about the rumours in an interview that July, suggesting he would be very open to making the switch.

“I always like to think of the present and I am here at Union and I am doing my best to help the club achieve its goals. Of course, if a good opportunity comes along for the club and for me, we will see,” he said.

“The best thing for both of us will be decided soon. I like to focus on the present. I don’t think much, it’s whatever has to happen. If it will be a good opportunity for both parties, we will discuss it. Milan is a great club, everyone knows that, it’s at the top of European clubs.

“It’s nice when you hear interest from other clubs, it’s a sign that your work is rewarded, that you are doing a good job and this gives me the motivation to keep working and give my best every day. I am focused on the present.”

  1. I’ve read a few weeks sgo he already agreed a 3 year old deal with Lazio but couldn’t pass his medical (or refused to do it because he knows he won’t pass).
