Marco van Basten has revealed his worries regarding the direction of AC Milan, with city rivals Inter on top of Italy again.

Van Basten is one of the most decorated players in Milan’s history, scoring 125 goals in 201 appearances across all competitions between 1987 and 1995. He won the Ballon d’Or three times and won 15 trophies with the Rossoneri, but was forced to retire early due to an ankle injury.

The ‘Swan of Utrecht’ as he was known was arguably the biggest star of the legendary Milan side that dominated European football in the late 1980s and early 1990s under Arrigo Sacchi. In other words, he knows what it takes to win at San Siro.

‘Not going very well’

Van Basten was recently inducted into the new AC Milan Hall of Fame and he spoke in an interview on Carlo Pellegatti’s YouTube channel. He offered his thoughts on a difficult present moment for Milan and his words are via Calciomercato.com.

“Here in Holland I’m a bit of an Ajax fan, but it’s not going very well, but it’s the same for Milan. Milan isn’t what it used to be either, and I hope they’ll be able to change that because Inter are in charge in Milan now, and I don’t like that,” he said.

“Italy out of the World Cup? I saw the Italian national team but the stars are missing. Italy always had a great centre-forward , a great defender, a great goalkeeper, a great midfielder and these days it is difficult to see them.

“Currently, there are many foreign owners in Italy who have nothing to do with the history of the clubs, nor are they interested in it. It’s a shame. It would be very important to try to bring Italian football back into the hands of Italians, so that they can return to the top of Europe.

“Italy has always been a great footballing country with a great history, with great players and seeing the Italian national team today is a bit strange. At the World Cup I’ll support Holland, but I don’t expect much. I’ll support Brazil a little, because of Carlo Ancelotti.”

  1. why none show-up & said “this is not 90’s” to MVB? anyone (foolani’s buzzer)?
this is an era of “balance the book”, trophy means nothing, battle of UCL spot is more “entertaining” than win it.
