Variety of Milan’s build-up play on display in Pulisic’s goal vs. Lazio – photo

One of the challenges that faced AC Milan going into the 2023-24 season was being able to break down teams that defend deep, but also those who are very organised.

After struggling to get through Lazio in the first half on Saturday evening, Stefano Pioli’s side kept their cool and continued with what they were doing: moving the ball around smartly to produce spaces and cause confusion.

For the opening goal in the 59th minute, 10 out of 11 players touched the ball starting from Mike Maignan’s possession. The Rossoneri got to the halfway line in four passes, moving the ball first out to the left flank, then into the box, back into midfield, down the right side and then back to the left before Rafael Leao’s cut-back set up Christian Pulisic.

It was a 27-action move in total, including just one touch for Lazio which was a clearance.
