GdS: Verona players protested to Doveri after Tonali’s second goal – the reason

By Oliver Fisher -

For once there was not much controversy surrounding AC Milan’s game on Sunday night against Hellas Verona, but a key incident has been spoken about.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanLive) praised Daniele Doveri’s performance as the referee got a 7 out of 10 in their ratings. Verona protested for one incident in particular and it was the goal that Sandro Tonali scored to make it 2-1.

The run by Rafael Leao down the left side and the assist for the midfielder – who scored into an empty net – did not seem to have anything suspicious about it but Verona players were unhappy with where Doveri was positioned.

He was accused of having ‘hindered’ the backward recovery of the Verona players, saying that he blocked their run, and Doveri even told Tameze: “I’m sorry, but I can’t disallow it.”

There were not many other incidents, but Tonali did have a goal disallowed that would have made it 1-0 in the first half. However, the offside position of Tonali at the moment of the deep kick by Maignan was clear to see as he was a few inches in front of Ilic.

In the first half Leao goes went down on the edge of the area after a possible push by Tameze, then inside the same area from the shoulder of Faraoni, but he correctly did not whistle either as a penalty.

  1. Come on, how many goals do they want to be disallowed????
Honestly this season (maybe the previous one too) I think all VAR decisions were all against Milan…..

P.S Not to mention, after the 1-3 all their tackles were to injure Milan players….

    1. And not to mention that Verona’s goal came after hitting the arm of the Verona player. And yes, it hit Kessie’s arm before but two wrongs still don’t make it right. Or did it when the Atletico player pushed the ball into Kalulu’s arm last year? Nope. No it didn’t.

  2. Lmao that was a pathetic excuse. Doveri was farrr behind and didn’t interrupt any Verona players run.

Not to mention Tonali 1st goal was unfairly disallowed and Milan deserve one PK after Leao got pushed inside Verona box. But Verona players doesn’t protest about those huh 😂

    1. that is a pathetic excuse; however you are wrong that Tonali’s first goal was unfairly disallowed. Tonali was CLEARLY offside. also the tackle on Leao was shoulder to shoulder and not a penalty.

  3. I think they should slap players that ask for things like this. I wasn’t looking the right way, can you please dissalow it?

  4. Faraoni should’ve been sent off after that tackle on Theo, then standing over him, running his mouth and then pushing Leao and starting an altercation. So that is one thing the ref definitely missed.
