Vieri praises Milan target Zirkzee but highlights: “Not a prolific goalscorer”

Joshua Zirkzee has ended up at the top of AC Milan’s wish list for the No.9 role and advanced talks are ongoing with his entourage. The former striker Christian Vieri has praised the Dutchman but also highlighted what is on everybody’s mind.

Milan need to sign a striker as Olivier Giroud has left the club, leaving the No.9 shirt and role vacant. Several names have been linked with the Rossoneri but the most advanced negotiation involves Bologna’s Zirkzee, who was great this past season.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, as cited by MilanNews, the former striker Christian Vieri was asked about the Euros and Zirkzee’s late call-up to the team. He praised the player but also highlighted the fact that he’s not really a prolific goalscorer.

“I was very surprised that they hadn’t called him before. He’s one who plays with the team and for the team: not a prolific goalscorer, but he has a lot of quality and when he scores goals, it’s easy for him to do it very well,” he stated.

Most fans are keen on Milan signing a proper goalscorer, like Lautaro Martinez for Inter and Dusan Vlahovic for Juventus, but there’s no denying Zirkzee’s qualities either. And the Rossoneri didn’t exactly have issues with scoring goals this past season, spreading it between several players.

  1. I don’t understand this idea of buying players only if they fit a particular playing style. I mean how did it work so far? And you want to continue adopting that strategy?
Milan is obsessed with so called “elegant” players but what does that even mean? Inter always play a solid type of football because the players they want are mostly experienced and brave in the field. What is so awful about that? You get results, yes? Plus they seem to survive their financial issues every year so we can cross that excuse out of our judging pattern.
But Milan prefer the style, no matter what…

  2. He’s not a target striker, just watch his highlights or analyze where he plays on the pitch. He’s a fantastic passer and would make a great second striker in a different system than ours. He hasn’t scored a goal through the air literally in 4.5 years. Go get Dovbyk or another true #9.

  3. He’s not a #9, he’s a second striker and a great passer but he’s not a target man. Unless we change from 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 he doesn’t fit our team.

  4. But sincerely speaking how many goals thus Lataro Martinez scores when he newly joined Inter, so pleased what’s good for goose is for the gander; with better team around Zirkzee,he might even scored up to double of what he did in Bologna,so I could even expect him to score at least 24 goals on his debut season with AC Milan, so Vieri and others should cut him some slacks and let’s see how many goals he will score.
