Vitiello: Potential €80m and resale clause – details of Tonali’s Newcastle move

By Isak Möller -

Sandro Tonali, albeit not officially, has left AC Milan to sign for Newcastle. The negotiations were concluded quickly and details about the deal have now emerged, after there were initially contradicting reports.

The news came as a shock to most Milan fans but the negotiations proceeded quickly and an agreement was eventually struck between the two clubs. Tonali accepted the move, knowing that Milan would get a lot of money and also because of the salary.

According to the reliable Antonio Vitello, Milan will get €80m for the sale including bonuses. There will also be a future resale percentage clause in favour of the Rossoneri. In short, it was an offer that the club couldn’t pass up on.

Tonali will earn a whopping €8m plus €2m in bonuses per year, according to Vitiello, and that says a lot about the deal as a whole. Milan will not sell another star this summer, though, as it would weaken the team too much.

  1. The potential resale clause was just a sweetheart trick that our management fell for to pay less. I obviously want tonali to do well and be successful but if he is And if Newcastle wants to profit by selling. He’s gonna have to be sold for probably 120+ or more if Newcastle wants any type of profit with our resale clause. He’ll either have to leave on a free or if he doesn’t do well, go on a loan with option to buy to juve or inter for 20 mil in reality haha

  2. This Tonali sale still makes no sense from Milan side.
If they decided to sell a big name, why choose Tonali?
Out of the 4 big names, Leao, Theo. Maignan and Tonali,
    Tonali is the youngest,
    on the lowest salary,
the lowest value on the market, the only one (I think) with a resale clause in his contract with % going to Brescia,
the player that sells the most jerseys ( probably more than the other 3 combined),
    plays every game,
and the player with the closest ties to the club, the fans and what it means to be a Milanista, especially 10 days after they fired Maldini, the club biggest legend.
    Something doesn’t add up.
If the goal was to sell a big name for funds wouldn’t be better to sell Maignan?
Yeah he is great, best GK in the world, but he is still just a GK.
Also, he is the oddest of the 4,
and he has been injury prone.
Why reject 80 mil for Maignan but accept for Tonali?
You sell Maignan for 80, you buy Vicario for 20, and you still got 60 left to build the rest of the squad.
You sell Tonali for 70, 10 goes to Brescia, and you are left with 60 and now you need to find replacement.

      1. From Tonali’ agent interview.

Is it a long contract? “Yes, six years. I am satisfied because it is a great operation. Sandro will help Milan here too in this operation, in the end it’s a lot of money for Milan too, MONEY ALSO FOR BRESCIA BECAUSE HE LOVES BRESCIA. And that’s fine.”

        1. According to fabrizio romano Brescia got 15% resale value if ACM sell tonali above 30m euro . But later after renegotiating ( after brescia relegated to serie B ) , Brescia choose to erase that 15% option with reward giacomo olzer from our academy . Maybe Brescia feel tonali price cannot go high than 40m euro and so they choose olzer

    1. I do agree with you on all accounts. Playing Devil’s Advocate, I think the argument would be that

      a) the opportunity was there
      b) in purely technical terms, he may be the easiest to find a replacement for

To me, Maignan would have been the most obvious if you could choose a sacrifice, but will there be a 60-70 bid for him?

      1. Playing devils advocate, none of us talks about the role of Tonali’s agent in this transfer.
For 2 decades we blamed Raiola for his clients moving often from club to club just so he can make commissions, bonuses, agent fees. Who says Tonali’s agent is different?
        Look at teh numbers.
Tonali signed new deal towards the end of 2022.
        5 years, 2.5 mil pers year = 12.5 mil
        His Newcastle deal,
6 years, up to 10 mil per year, = 60 mil
        12.5 vs 60 million.
        That’s a big difference there.
Donnarumma told Maldini ” I’ll do whatever Raiola tells me”
Why would this be any different for Tonali?

    2. I think they sold Tonali because out of all the players you mentioned, he was the most overvalued and the easiest to replace from a footballing perspective, to say nothing of what he meant to Milan fans as a flag bearer. Tonali is a 50m player we are getting 80m for. I doubt they could get 50% above transfer value for any of the other “core four” as it were. Like the article states this is a no brainer economically for Sandro and the club. Still makes me sad and angry though.

    3. “If they decided to sell a big name, why choose Tonali?
Out of the 4 big names, Leao, Theo. Maignan and Tonali,”

Simple. He’s the easiest to replace. Average midfielders can be found anywhere. Theo is probably the best in the world in his position (at least in TOP3), Maignan is in TOP3 as well and some people here think Leao will be the GOAT.

Who is the easiest to replace? The one who cannot get a corner kick past the 1st or 2nd opponent.

      1. The corner argument, good point 80M for a guy who can’t kick a corner to save his life 😂😂

Love Tonali, hope does well but you are right, he’s the most easily replaced…

      2. Lol the corner argument but yet 30% of his assists came from corners 🤦‍♂️
Maybe he takes too many is what ur saying?

        1. Quantity over quality. He needs to give 30 corners to land one on a team mate. He was lucky to have players such as Giroud on the receiving end though.

Compare Tonali’s corners to e.g. Napoli’s or Inter’s. It’s closer to 9/10 that look dangerous. Tonali can’t get anywhere near those numbers. Faaaar from it.

    4. You forgot we can sell tomori to EPL club because he was home grown there ( academy chelsea ) . But newcastle offer come fast before they can find buyer for tomori or all name you mention. They feel that offer 70m euro cash + bonus 10m euro + 10% resale are over price so management cooperate with beppe riso ( tonali agent) to persuade tonali join to newcastle . Beppe riso get signing fee from that transfer too. Mike never get official offer from chelsea, it is just media speculation. For leao , he is key player for pioli and he just renew. For theo ,i feel like he will leave following maldini his mentor but ACM still not receive official offed for theo

  3. The resale clause is very low. The team quality drop drastically because now you don’t have midfield anymore. No Striker no RW and for now no cam at least with tonali you closed midfield and only wanted 2 backups

  4. Glad for Sandro in regards to his financial well being. Of the “big four” he was the only home boy…..although he is not the player I follow, Sandro being Italian was a fan favorite and wore the black and red proudly on his shirt sleeve. Good luck we will miss you. However two things come to mind , objectively he can and will hopefully be replaced with someone better, but replacing his spirit will be tough, Secondly , Cardinale does not care about the personality ,the spirit, the Rossoneri tradition, guy could care less about us, his concern is about the almighty Euro.
