AC Milan must support Massimiliano Allegri by making some ‘serious signings’ in the summer window, according to Antonio Vitiello.
Milan are on track to achieve what they set out to before a ball was kicked: to secure a return to the Champions League. However, the dropped points against sides in the bottom half and the missed chance to put pressure on Inter by losing against Lazio has highlighted some shortcomings.
There have been growing calls for Allegri to try tweak the system in order to get the best out of the forwards available, but on the flip side he has shored the team up defensively, which was certainly the biggest issue coming into the campaign.
New faces needed
Vitiello published his weekly column for MilanNews and he chose to address what might happen from now on regarding the formation Allegri is using and a big upcoming summer mercato.
“Will things continue like this? Or will Allegri attempt a change in formation or players? Because in the second half against Lazio, when the team switched to a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formation, they seemed to occupy space better,” he said.
“Milan are sorely lacking a strong striker, and the arrival of Fullkrung (very predictable) hasn’t changed the balance. The German continues to play infrequently and produce very little. At this rate, he’ll be gone at the end of the season. Not to mention Nkunku, worth over €40m, and who has only played in the early 2026 games. Too little.
“Now we absolutely must secure a Champions League spot, then at the end of the year we’ll need to strengthen the team with at least four serious signings. Milan must have strong players in its squad, players who can immediately transform the team.
“Players who can excel in the games that matter and take on responsibilities. We need to get back to winning ways, possibly starting a new era, and the only way to do that is to spend the available resources wisely. This summer will be crucial.”

This obsession with formation change.
Milan is 2nd on the table thanks to the formation they’ve been playing this season, not in spite of it. They have the best defense in the league and one of the best in Europe thanks to that formation.
Same nonsense just like after the Cremonese game. Oh, Milan switched to 433 or 4231 in the 2nd half and they got better or they occupied space better. What did occupying space better in the 2nd half do when it comes to creating chances? Nothing, just like vs Cremonese. The only difference this time around is that there was no lucky bounce of someone’s nose for Milan to score.
The other thing is that if you want Milan to switch to 433 next season you will need more than just 4 signings. You might need just 4 new signings in defense. As shaky as the CBs are this season, they look much better because its 3 of them. Play with only 2 and you’ll find out. Milan has no full back in the squad. They don’t have enough midfielders and they only have one winger in the squad whose speed might be compromised that he can outpace anyone on the pitch.
Nkunku was because of and by Furlani for his own personal reasons, not to help the team. Just so we are clear.
Furlani & Moncada the duo causing the downfall of AC Milan
Much of what you say is great.
But your argument about needing XBd runs counter to your own point. 3 shakey CBs doesn’t make a top European defense.
Allegri has taken the talent there and shown it to be far more than what was expected. Forza Max.
At the same time he has taken the talents of Rafa and Puli and largely neutralized them. Debole Max.
Formation aside Max, in concert with Tare and hopefully to the exclusion of Furlani need to maximize the potential on the field on all departments. Sforzo Max!
If the project is a 352 base then Rafa will be sold. Pulisic will stay as a second striker. It stuns me how few realize part of his slump is covering for Leao in other phases of the game. Nkunku will stay to complete with Pulisic. Fullkrug will stay because he is cheap. Santi I have no idea. I’d like to see Tammy Abraham return as depth and competition. I’d like to see Camarda on our bench and used regularly in games against bottom teams in Serie A and UCL.
Given the budget for any individual player doubled this season, I wonder what 60m would get us at the 9? If Rafa leaves, does the cap on highest salary leave with him and slide to where we can pay a 60m player?
If something good can be said to have come from the Lazio match, our Interest in Gila shows we are serious about depth in even our strongest department playing twice per week
I’m disappointed in how the team played. I’m disappointed in Pulisic clearly forcing the scoring attempts and looking away from Rafa. I am done with Rafa pitch walking like Messi and impacting the game like Dovbyk. I am angry Allegri was out coached by Sarri. But that is just one week.
We went from 8th place and a team in crisis to achieving the states goal and over achieving on our spot in the table so far.
This summer will be telling about the health of our finances and intent to catch Inter in star count and Real madrid in UCL championships.
Sforzo Milan. Get to work!
Again, the ultimate question is, what is the actual plan of this ownership for this team?
Gerry’s actual focus and frequent visits to Milan revolve around the NBA expansion and not this club. Which likely means more meddling in our current capacity without significant upgrades…
“Ehhh… it’s working… they are back in CL… good enough…” And frankly Gerry doesn’t have any of his own money to put into this club anyway, so self sustained mercato. Sell a sure thing and fund a couple of more “maybe’s”.
So, who are we selling this summer?
Dear Gerry Cardinale, whoever reads this even under my previous email address know that I give great advice but Honourable Saint Silvio made us AC Milan champions and living saints. Now Camarda is a born and bred Milanista and a champion, he needs only Milan way not game time at other clubs and their habits. Yes Spain helped Gabbia but Camarda’s offside header although offside proved a new blood of a legend. Now Furlani is dangerous, Ibraimovich understands what it takes to have success in Europe. Whatever your trust in Furlani move him to NBA, 2 40 million signing is not better that 1 80 million with a youngster learning or just get a successful veteran like lewondoski and let Camarda learn, happy for bartasaghi, 17 million for estupian well good back up. Lots more advice but you chose Milan when you could have bought Torino had no pressure and built the Turin derby as a serious rivalry with no expectation yet you chose Milan, a club that desires champions league above scudetto. Now prove to us that you can match Silvio. Can you do it? We are counting on you.
