‘Between €40-50m’ – Vitiello confirms Milan have big budget for a striker

AC Milan have a sizeable budget available to go out and sign a new starting striker this summer, according to Antonio Vitiello.

The new sporting director Igli Tare confirmed Milan want a new striker last week, and he even went as far as to say that they are looking for a centre-forward with characteristics very similar to Olivier Giroud.

It was not a case of writing off Santiago Gimenez, who Massimiliano Allegri intends to work on developing. Instead, it is a mission to strengthen the position after Luka Jovic and Tammy Abraham left, and with Francesco Camarda close to departing.

Milan to spend big on a starter

Vitiello has published his latest column for MilanNews and he dedicated a part of it to the pursuit of a new centre-forward, even revealing the budget that will be available.

“The other piece that will measure Milan’s ambitions concerns the striker. You can’t save money on a strong striker. Allegri wants a starter, a penalty area man who knows how to finish off, someone like Giroud in terms of characteristics,” he said.

“For the striker, we’re talking about a good budget, between 40 and 50 million euros. But it will also depend on the other sales that will be made during the market. However, a strong striker is needed, regardless of Gimenez.”

  1. What we need is better scouting and management, not a bigger budget. We could have had Retegui for 21M, or Ekitike for 17M. Instead they got Morata and Abraham, and when that failed they spent 30M on Gimenez. If they spend 50M on a striker now, they’ll be flushing that 30M spent on Gimenez down the toilet. If they want a big target man and have a 50M budget, they should close Lucca tomorrow for 25M cash and be done with it. Then the saved 25M can be used elsewhere. But I’m guessing it will be used on Allegri favorite Vlahovic, who is another one with a bad attitude and average record, so the risks are high. It’s not a profile I would associate with, or want, in our project.

    1. I think we will end up with Lucca or Retegui. Possibly Mitrovic if he wants to return to Europe and is willing to drop his salary

      1. Lucca is close to Napoli, apparently. Vice-Lukaku. Retegui? If Hojlund was 65M with 9 goals, Retegui is at least 100M. I would say Scamacca is likelier…

    2. Agree with that – we always seem to crave a 50M player who was a 15M player a season or two before. Surely we can’t throw Gimenez under the bus after a few months?

    3. If we want euro football….we must go for top target man and that is hard to be made. We can go for hojlund Who is all but isnt bad player….tall…good with and without ball….or we can fo for second profile like greek pavlidis…knows how to score. ….guy is in chance every game….

    4. I was ranting about Retegui two seasons ago when he was available for 12 millions from Argentina.

But it doesn’t matter they splash 50 millions on a striker when we have no structure in place for them. We need creative players with vision who will feed these strikers.

    5. Totally agree, we need better scouting, we miss out on a lot of potential players, and waste a lot of money on average players,

    6. I also think it has to do with the environment. Not to be mr rain-cloud here, but i bet Gimenez would do great at Atalanta. Part of it is, we do not set up our strikers for success. We arent like ManU yet but we are on our way.
CDK doing great there, Hojlund did great and not stinks at ManU. The env matters.

  2. It’s not only about having a class forward, we need providers. Players who will feed these finishers. Last two seasons there we’re no passers just a bunch of runners and ball carriers failing to connect our back line with front line with no creativity or vision, let alone positional awareness.

I like what I am seeing with Allegri and Tare, these two are actually building from where we lacked the most. Midfield. To give an actual structure and a sense to it.

    1. I agree. I think we need a striker to compliment Jimenez – someone that can drop deeper and play with his back to goal, w/ a good first touch. Jimenez is an investment, but he’s more of a fox in the box.

      1. You just described Tammy, who had 10 goals and 7 assists for us this past season in limited playing time but for some reason we have to go search for someone else who probably won’t even match those numbers.

    2. ACM will have provider for next season . Modric & Jashari ( still rumour) for midfield. The real problem , ACM dont have full back starter both left & right. RB : emerson the trash on his way out while florenzi out of contract . LB : theo on his way out .

  3. Milan deve focar as suas pretensões em Ikelilena e também em Fabian(bologna) e deve manter Francisco Camarada no plantel de 26/26.
Aonde anda Rossing Lestit? Jogadores que tenham objectivo no golo para construir um tridente Ibraim Maza e Malick Tillman

  4. Would much prefer to see Carmarda get more minutes, than we buy a 50 mil striker. Carmarda is class, sharp and dangerous the few times he did play with the first team. Spend that $ on more quality in other depts…the extra 5 mil for jashari….a move for Cambiaso, a more quality RB, a ball playing CB. Very sad that we are giving Lecce the chance to buy this gem, and letting Liberali go as well.
Our future direction seems bleak, was hoping a Sporting director would stabilize things.

    1. Based on what? His zero goals and assists with the first team? All his limited time showed us is that he is not ready yet. He’s 17 and needs a lot of playing time which he won’t get here. A loan is the best option for him.

  5. Why not Jonatan David?
He is free transfer. Calaculate his value as free transfer and salary and comapre to 40-50mil transfer plus salary for new steiker….

    1. It is pretty much the same, as his entourage asks for 30 million in commissions + 5/6 million/year salary. Besides, he is not the profile that Allegri wants.

  6. There are players like Retegui’s potential for amount less than 25 million. The problem is that Milan don’t trust them.

They want to sign a PROVEN striker for 25-35 millions range which is impossible. That’s the problem.

Milan won’t spend more than 35-38 million. I guarantee you that

  7. Give Napoli the €45m plus Musah for Osimhen.
Give him a sizeable salary to compensate for non UCL football.

  8. We spend 9 million on loaning Felix for half a year but can’t afford to pay a top striker that 9 million a year. Also give gimenez a chance. Should just keep Colombo and camarda and forget about striker. Roma will win the league.

  9. Buying striker that want full starter will make 35m euro investment for santi gimenez wasted. Why not trust santi? Just find cheap striker but decent similar to tammy last season that are willing accepting rotation role

    1. santi is the only striker we have now. and he’s unproven yet. u cant’ go into a season with one unproven striker. colombo is not good enough, not even for back up
