Vitiello: Milan’s summer budget starts at €90-100m – how it is derived

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan will start with a nice available budget for the summer transfer window and there is the possibility that it could be further increased, a journalist has claimed.

In case you missed it, over on our Substack we analysed the predictions for the 2023-24 accounts and what this means for the availability to spend during the upcoming mercato, which is available as a free read.

According to Antonio Vitiello of MilanNews, Milan will ‘start from a budget of 90-100 million’ this summer, which derives from the €50m for participating in the Champions League, the €16m for finishing second in Serie A, the €23m from Charles De Ketelaere moving permanently to Atalanta, and the departures of Junior Messias and Rade Krunic.

Furthermore, the club will save on the salaries of Olivier Giroud, Simon Kjaer, Mattia Caldara and Antonio Mirante, then there will be the capacity to send some young players out on loan to further decrease the wage bill.

With a budget of €90-100m, Milan will ‘begin to operate on the incoming market’ and then they will evaluate any bids that come in, even for top players.

We can ‘start from the assumption that the club does not need to sell’, but the sale of Sandro Tonali for €70m ‘teachesus  that no player can be considered unsellable at certain figures’.

  1. If there was any truth to that, the number would also have to include any salaries and signing costs (sign on fees, agent commissions etc).

No doubt there’ll be a hundred articles this summer saying “budget is Xm” which in reality means nothing, because the annual cost of having a player on the books is made up of a lot of factors. One number they won’t publish is the annual budget for staff, which is the only one that actually matters, but is a lot less tabloid-friendly.

  2. What a load of cr*p. RedBird a vulture fund to spend big amounts on a player. It’s about buying low and selling high, getting cheap talent and elevate their value, consequently elevating brand value, consequently generating ROI for Gerry’s investors.

It’s what Fonseca did in Lille. While he was there, the squad value risen, he developed the likes of Bafode Diakite, Leny Yoro and Angel Gomez. And that’s why he’s hired.

Forget the likes of Zirkzee, Šeško, Buongiorno and embrace the likes of Guirassy, Denkey, Brassier, Tiago Santos.

  3. I hope its correct but if my memory serves me right im pretty sure we read the same thing last year in may. Infact we only ended up investing 30-40 mil on top of the tonali sale even though we already earned over 100 mil in cl the previous season,
Messias was alreeady sold to genoa in january as well.
In the end time will tell but if we actually do have roughly 100 mil + future sales that might occur then bring us sesko.

    1. The difference was that last year the startbudget was 35 million and we only read about maldini and massaras plan to invest 100 million with sales(but they didnt planned to sell stars)this year cdk clause will be triggered its confirmed and messias+krunic so basically sales are already made without selling any important player so thaths why the start can be much higher this year

      1. Not really we earned over 100 mil in the 22-23 season just in cl reaching the semi finals plus we played for a full stadium all year + improved several of our advertisement deals that should have financed our entire transfer kit last season. Messias was bought by genoa in january for 1.5 mil euros. Krunic wont cost much more this summer.
My point here is that regardless of what cash we might earn dont bet your money that it will just be spend because they could have done that already last year and they didnt.
Maybe they will this year but i would be surprised but ill nevertheless hope for the best,

        1. In other words, our starting budget might be around 60M-70M unless we manage to sell another player this summer.

          1. @Martin Bernhard
What I’m truly afraid of, is that the management tries to sell Theo because he wants 8M a year and that he can brings us north of 80M. If they’re gonna sell someone they should go for Maignan who can still bring more than 40M or even Bennacer.
Then it will come to which players we target during this summer, because there are many names (and positions) that don’t inspire confidence.

          2. I agree and I have no glaring issues with us selling Maignan or/and Bennacer especially if Maignan is demanding 8 mil a year and Bennacer is also one of our highest paid players while also one of the most injury prone ones. Selling Theo is the worst sale that can happen in my book. In hindsight selling Tonali wasnt the end of the world considering his gambling ban but he was nevertheless my favourite player in the team and same goes for Theo. I’ll be furious if he is sold because they wont give him a salary like Leao because the frenchman is the most difficult player to replace in my view and I’ve been saying this for years.
The ownership will lose a lot of goodwill and faith from me if that actually happens.

      2. Last year the initial tansfer budget was reportedly raised after M&M were fired. Which implies that the bankers didn’t want to waste money on “assets” that would not turn into capital gain later. When Moncada and magic Beane came with the idea of buying low cost players with potential to be sold for more, the budget increased suddenly. And then of course they sold Tonali.

      1. I would take sesko, younger and even though still expenssive probably a lot cheaper than gyokeres. Id keep jovic instead of pinamonti and if we were to but a young italian id pick lucca. Nasti not really sure there but he is out on loan with an option to buy even though with a buyback option. Not sure he would cut it id rather promote colombo then.

          1. No not now but maybe one day when we have our own stadium, i was just saying if we actually had 90-100 mil + eventual sales not mentioned here then i would seriously hope we would get sesko who i find far more intriguing than anyone else mentioned to be scouted by us.

  4. The transfer budget and wage budget don’t work the same. Sure u can include both together if you normalize but due to varying lengths of contracts it’s hard to do Plus a chunk of that supposed 90m would be swallowed up by the same outgoing wages (unless they find cheaper replacements ofc) which basically puts the the allocation for transfer fees back to around 40m transfer budget in any case. It’s quite convenient math to make the number seem bigger than the actual amount. Kinda like shaving the pubes 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣

  5. Already more than enough for 3 player . Request from Nonseca are jonathan david striker ( 30m euro due to last year contract) & Tiago RB ( cost 10m euro ) . The rest budget can go to DMF . No need to sell key player unless that player asking to leave himself .
