Voetbal24: Milan could consider free transfer as Napoli striker wants to stay in Italy

By Isak Möller -

AC Milan currently have Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Olivier Giroud as their strikers and it’s not exactly surprising that the management wants to bring in some youth. Despite this, though, they have been linked with veteran Dries Mertens.

Mertens has played in Serie A since 2013, always with Napoli, but his contract will expire in the summer and it doesn’t look like he will renew. According to the Belgian outlet Voetbal24, Milan are one of the teams interested in his services.

Furthermore, the striker and his partner want to stay in Italy beyond this season, willing to consider the options on the table. In spite of this report, it’s not an option that seems likely for Milan as they are working on other signings (also because he’s 34).

For example, they are in advanced talks with Divock Origi over a free transfer in the summer. Only a few details remain, as per Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews), since the Liverpool man has his heart set on the move.
